LOWS AND HIGHS: 2004

On Sunday, Arlington Memorial West on the beach
displayed 1,000 crosses -- 968 white crosses and 32 blood red crtosses,
honoring the 1324 soldiers who have died in the Iraq wae Ten months
ago, when the Veterans for Peace began the memorial, each cross was
white and represented a single American solder who was killed in Iraq.
Now as the number of dead soldiers continues to rise, the Veterans
have acknowledged the practical impossibility of representing each
dead soldier with an individual cross, and are using red crosses to
represent ten soldiers.
