Canyon Station: Gas, Oil and Dance

Kathleen Herd Masse Mirror contributing writer
For 80 years, Canyon Station has pumped petrol for motorists winding
their way through Santa Monica Canyon.
The oldest full-service station in Los Angeles, it has also cultivated
a specialty client base: classic car owners from all over Southern
California whose Mustangs, Mercedes, and GTOs crave hard-to-find,
high-octane fuel.
Now a developer has his eye on the property and plans to dismantle the
clapboard building and its three gleaming pumps.
Brian Clark has leased and operated the station since 1995. Faced with
its possible closure, Clark is hosting a party to say “thank you” to
his customers and neighbors. The November 6 event will feature a
performance by Hassan Christopher’s cutting edge dance troupe, Company
of Strangers.
Clark is a fan of the critically acclaimed Company, and was pleased
when Christopher asked permission to stage a show at the station.
“Their work is site specific,” he explains, “and this one will
incorporate the station. The choreography will be created around the
theme of the automobile and the gas station.” It was Clark’s idea to
turn the performance into a party.
Admission is free and the public is invited.
“No one,” says Clark, “is a stranger at the station.”
