JAMS Wins Garden Grant
Santa Monica’s John Adams Middle School is
one of six California schools to win a 2004 school garden grant from
the California Fertilizer Foundation.
The JAMS garden has a triple role — as classroom, garden club and
cafeteria supplement.
The teachers use the gardens to illustrate lessons in math, science
and literature, and students and teachers who participate in the
school’s “Salad Bar Gardens Co-Op” get free salad bar lunches.
The 2004 grants were given to elementary, middle and high schools,
ranging from Carlsbad in the south to Stonyford in the north.
Founded in 1999, the California Fertilizer Foundation has worked to
enhance awareness and understanding of plant nutrients and agriculture
in California. Through its garden program, it provides direct funding
to California schools for garden projects. To date, it has donated
over $40,000 to approximately 70 schools.
Grant applications can be downloaded from www.calfertilizer.org and
are reviewed on a quarterly basis. |
