22nd Stewart Marathon Is Sunday
The Jimmy Stewart relay marathon began as a simple run
to raise funds for Saint John’s Child and Family Development Center 22
years ago. Today, it’s the largest five-person relay marathon in
America, attracting thousands of runners in over 20 divisions, and
almost as many spectators.
In its two-plus decades, it has raised nearly $8 million for the
center.
Since legendary actor Jimmy Stewart’s death, actor Robert Wagner
has been host of the event. This year, Wagner’s co-host is fellow
actor Chris O’Donnell.
The 22nd edition of the relay marathon and family expo will take
place Sunday, April 23, in Griffith Park. More than 25,000 people are
expected to compete in the race and attend the expo.
Each five-person team will run the standard 26-mile marathon, with
each runner covering 5.25 miles. The divisions are based on age,
gender and corporate/industry affiliatons. Also scheduled are
children’s races, including a Diaper Dash, and a celebrity race. The
relay marathon will begin at 8 a.m. with the celebrity race scheduled
at 10:30 a.m.
Among the celebrities who are expected to compete are Downtown
Julie Brown, Olympic Gold Medal winner Bruce Jenner, Star Trek’s
Walter Koenig, volleyball stars Sinjin Smith and Bruk Van Deweigh, and
teams from the TV Guide Channel, sitcoms Yes, Dear and Malcolm in the
Middle and KCOP News, KNBC News and KCAL News.
As in previous years, all proceeds will go to the Center. |
