Mothers for Justice Receives Commendation
On Cesar Chavez Day at Santa Monica High School,
Mothers for Justice received a commendation signed by State Senator
Sheila Kuehl that praised the community activist group for its
“tireless commitment to peace and justice.”
“It is incredibly rewarding to have MFJ’s efforts recognized at the
state level. It inspires us to forge ahead and keep fighting to see
that the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s administrators
follow policy,” said MFJ Co-Chair, Irma Carranza. “Our goal is to make
our community a viable place for all — regardless of race and
socio-economic status.”
Mothers for Justice was founded by a group of parents who were
concerned about abuses of students’ civil rights and inequitable
treatment of students of color in the District. In response, the
District developed new policies to ensure that students’ rights would
not be abridged and all students would be treated equally. |
