GROOVES

Center Stage: Santana, Ozomatli

Highlights

Rock, Pop

Wayne Kramer at The Baked Potato, 10/15. Some consider MC5 to be the first punk band, kicking off the Motor City Rock tradition of Iggy & The Stooges, et. al. Now an LA local, his latest DIY release, Adult World was recorded right here at home.
Calypso: A Tribute to Kitch: The Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, David Rudder at UCLA’s Royce Hall, 10/12. The reigning triumvirate of Calypso pays tribute to pioneer Lord Kitchner who tore up the Caribbean with his take on the genre. Most people think that rap’s roots are in the The Last Poets/Watt’s Poets, but actually, the tradition of rhyming over music started down in the islands with Calypso and what they call “toasting.”
