“Strange Stars” at SMC This Month
“Strange Stars,” an examination of “strange matter”
that can make even black holes seem normal, will be the featured show
October 4, 11 and 18 at 8 p.m. at Santa Monica College’s Friday night
astronomy series.
The guest lecture in October will be “Jet-Propelled Laboratories in
Deep Space.” David Meier of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory will
describe his studies on the jets of hot gas that blast away from black
holes and newly formed stars. It is scheduled for Friday, October 25
at 8 p.m.
The feature show and guest lecture will both be preceded by “The
Night Sky Show,” which re-creates the night sky and provides the
latest information on space exploration, at 7 p.m.
“The Night Sky Show” and “Strange Stars” will be held in the John
Drescher Planetarium, which has a state-of-the-art Digistar projection
system. It is located on the second floor of Drescher Hall, 1900 Pico
Boulevard. The lecture is set for Room 140 of the Science Complex.
Tickets are $5 each or $8 for the double bill, with discounts for
children and senior citizens. For information, call (310) 434-4223 or
