Reflecting the Concerns of the Community  June 19 - 25, 2002 Vol. 4, Issue 1

Two Local Scouts Become Eagles

Two area teenagers, members of Boy Scouts Troop Two of Santa Monica, were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout earlier this month. Peter Denton Kaldis and Blake Garrick Miller, both 18, were honored at an awards ceremony Sunday June 9 at Camp Josepho Boy Scout camp in Pacific Palisades.
Eagle, the highest rank in scouting, recognizes exemplary effort and leadership, and is attained by only two percent of all Boy Scouts.
In addition to demonstrating proficiency in first aid, citizenship, camping, swimming and emergency preparedness, Eagle candidates must coordinate and complete a community service project that provides significant benefit to the community.
Both young men from Troop Two chose projects aimed at fixing up Santa Monica schools. Miller led a team that built and painted a tool shed for Franklin Elementary School. Kaldis’ group refurbished the garden plot at McKinley Elementary, replacing the borders of raised planting beds so that students can grow vegetables. Miller and Kaldis are seniors at Santa Monica High School.
