Indian Art Show Comes to the Civic Auditorium
Native American Music and Stories Will Be Performed
Contemporary Native American artists, musicians and
storytellers will gather in the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium this
weekend for the Santa Monica Indian Art Show.
Prize-winning ledger art, acrylic and oil paintings, jewelry and
sculpture by such noted artists as Michael Horse and John Balloue will
be on display Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2.
Outdoor performances by musician Xavier Quijas Yxayoti who plays
authentic hand-made instruments and storyteller Ernest Siva, one of
the few remaining people to speak Sereno, are also on the weekend
agenda.
Among the historic art objects to be shown are Guatemalan masks,
Southwestern kachinas, Plains Indians’ beadwork, Pacific Northwest
carvings, Pre-Columbian pottery and Latin American art. Under the
rules of this show, no sacred items are offered fir sale
Approximately 160 antique dealers and contemporary artists are
expected to take part in the show.
K.R. Martindale, now producer of the show, grew up in Santa Monica.
A visit to an earlier iteration of this show ignited his interest in
Indian Art. He began collecting arrowheads and moccasins and
ultimately began producing the show.
Show hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults. Children under 17 will be
admitted free. |
