Highlights
Rock/Pop
Common Sense, Trans-global Underground at The Twilight Dance (Santa Monica Pier) 7/19. It’s that time again. For balmy nights on the pier, while the wild surf crashes below. Time for the mix of music, the scents of cotton candy, hot dogs and salty sea air meandering about like cheerful guests at the party. Enjoy the exotic, pounding sounds at sunset, of two bands, who together, make a 52 pick-up of Reggae, hip hop, dub, soul, R&B, and ska. 7:30pm – FREE.
Cowboy Nation (Chip & Tony Kinman), Gary Robertson Da Poetry Lounge at The Knitting Factory, 7/19. They’ve had it under cover for a while now, playing incognito in small westside dive bars, and now they’re pulling the rug off Cowboy Nation at the big house. Find out what Chip n’ Tony are up to know by checking them out at Da Lounge…
Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin at The Greek Theatre 7/20. His country twang and her moody yet wispy melodies converge upon the Greek tonight. A big affair for such once-obscure artists. Glad to see they’ve both hit the big time.
Jazz, Classical
Sonny Fortune, Ronnie Mathhews, Cecil McBee, Steve Johns at The Jazz Bakery 7/19. Truly a night to splurge on. A chance to see the great Sonny Fortune blow his sax, pianist Ronnie Mathews walk the ivories, while Cecil McBee rides the bass and Steve Johns brings it all back home again on the drums. If you wanna check out at least one jazz show that’ll stick with you for nights to come, this would be it.
