SM Mayor Pro Tem Wins National Green Party Post

Santa Monica Mayor pro tem Kevin McKeown has been elected to the national coordinating committee of the new Green Party of the United States.
“Santa Monica and its progressive commitments to social justice and environmental sustainability are widely admired by Greens across the country,” said McKeown. “I’m pleased to carry our local accomplishments to the national level.”
McKeown will be one of 13 California delegates to the Green Party of the United States, representing the 145,000 Green Party members now registered in California.
“Our delegates are ambassadors of our Green values, ready to build a new kind of politics in our country,” stated the Green Party of California in announcing election of its national delegate team May 5 in Fresno.
The Green Party of the United States was recognized last year by the Federal Elections Commission as a fully-qualified national political party. McKeown will represent California at the Greens’ first full national assembly in Philadelphia in July.
Other delegates from the Los Angeles area include Sara Amir, Alex Brideau III, Ginny Case and Donna Warren, who is the California Green Party’s current candidate for Lieutenant Governor.
“Santa Monica was philosophically Green before most of us knew the movement had a name,” reflected McKeown. “Expanding our values of grass-roots participation to a national political stage dominated by corporate money will be a great challenge.”
A onetime Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights steering committee member, McKeown was the second Green to win a seat on the Santa Monica City Council. Mayor Michael Feinstein, also a Green, is serving his second term on the Council.
McKeown also serves on the Civic Center Working Group and is Council liaison to the Planning, Housing, Arts and Social Services Commissions.
Locally, the Westside Greens meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, June 7, the group will host a special Living Wage event in its office at 2809 Pico Boulevard.
