Prep Playoff Round-Up
From Baseball to Volleyball, Area Schools Try For Division
Championships The CIF Playoffs are underway for
most spring sports. Local teams are currently competing in post-season
action in baseball, softball, track and field, tennis and volleyball.
After just sneaking in to the playoffs, the Santa Monica High
School Baseball team was defeated by Oxnard High in a Division I
wildcard game on Tuesday May 14, by a score of 13-10.
Competing in Division V, St. Monica Catholic High School lost to
Pasadena Poly in the first round, 7-6.
Brentwood School, also in Division V, topped Oakwood, 4-1, on
Friday May 17, to move on to second round play vs. Mary Star on
Tuesday, May 21.*
In Division VI, New Roads lost to Grace Brethren, 7-4, in the first
round.
The women of Crossroads and Brentwood, the two local teams to
compete in the first round of softball post-season play, were both
defeated on Friday, May 17. Crossroads lost to Alverno, 8-7, and
Brentwood, who had defeated St. Monica’s a few days earlier in a
wildcard game, fell to Pasadena Poly, 7-0.
In tennis, Samohi beat Aliso Niguel in second round play, 12-6, on
May 16, to face Dana Hills in the Division I quarterfinals on Tuesday
21.*
Crossroads defeated Crespi Mission High in round two. The
Roadrunners matched-up against Corona del Mar in Division V
quarterfinals play, also on Tuesday.*
Brentwood, in Division V, defeated Malibu High, 13-5, and met
Pasadena Poly in the quarterfinal round.*
Samohi, the only local school to participate in CIF track and field
post-season play, competed in the Divisional Finals on Saturday, May
18. None of the Vikings moved on to the Masters’ meet.
In men’s volleyball, Brentwood defeated Armenian General Benevolent
Union School, 3-0; in second round play on Tuesday, May 14. The Eagles
faced Brethren Christian – who trounced Crossroads, 3-0, in the first
round – in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 17. Brentwood swept
Brethren, 3-0, and will meet Arrowhead Christian in the Division V
semi-finals, Wednesday, May 22.
