Sister Celebration Set For Friday At John Anson Ford
A diverse group of woman performers will appear in “Sister Celebration 2001,” which combines song, dance and the spoken word, at the John Anson Ford Amphitheater, on Friday, July 13, at 8 p.m.
Karen Malina White of TV’s “Malcolm & Eddie” will narrate “Sister Celebration.” Karyn Bryant, host of VH-1’s “Name That Video,” is billed as a special guest.
On the bill are: ADAAWE, a six-woman percussion/vocal group performing African-based rhythms and tight contemporary vocals; Afia Walking Tree, a Jamaican-born African percussionist; Blaque Pearle, an R&B/Soul vocalist who has appeared with Beck and Cree Summer; Cee Cee Michaela, Soul vocalist, featured on BET; Chaunice Coleman; Witch Haizel, who integrates dance and the spoken word; Joselyn, singer who mixes Jazz, Folk, Blues and World rhythms with poetic lyrics; Larisa Stow, an up-and-coming artist who appears on a new CD DVD put out by DMX; Marcia Jones’ visual art backdrops, “Reflections of Women through Celebration”; Omo Axe, traditional Afro-Cuban drum, dance, and song ensemble; Sita Kali Ma, a ‘’spiritual warrior’ performing with Indian flutes and chants; Sonia Santos and Ana Gazzola of Brasil Brazil, divas of Brazilian music; and Swing Brazil performing Traditional Brazilian Orisha and Samba dance.
Several inspiring women who are active on national and community levels in education and the arts will be honored during “Sister Celebration 2001.”
The John Anson Ford Amphitheatre is located at 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, off the 101 (Hollywood) Freeway just north of Hollywood Bowl.
