Lemvo, Makina Loca To Perform at Madison

Afro-Cuban musicians Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca,
whose fusion of African and Latin music has been dubbed “the future of
salsa,” will perform a free outdoor concert 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16
2 p.m., at Santa Monica College’s Madison campus, 11th Street & Santa
Monica Boulevard.
The concert is part of both SMC’s CubaFest 2002, a two-month-long
celebration of the cultural heritage of the island nation and its
ongoing Madison Performance Series designed to bring attention to
SMC’s plan to build a 500-seat performing arts and education facility
at the Madison site.
The hot rhythms and distinctive style of Ricardo Lemvo and Makina
Loca — who have performed throughout the world — have won widespread
critical acclaim. The Boston Herald said the group has created “one of
the most potent musical marriages imaginable, the Cuban son with the
African soukous.”
Lemvo, who grew up in Central Africa at a time when Cuban music and
American soul were taking Africa by storm, moved to Los Angeles in
1972 to pursue a political science degree.
Free parking is available at Madison. Hot and cold beverages,
T-shirts and CDs will be available for purchase. For more information,
call (310) 434-3431. |
