Santa Monica High School’s Men’s Soccer team is at 500 in league
with a 2-1 victory over South Torrance and a scoreless tie versus
Hawthorne. Santa Monica (8-6-7, 4-4-2) continues to rely on star
senior forward Marin Zarate, who sets a new school record with every
score.
Crossroads’ Men’s Soccer team, which fell last week to Campbell
Hall, 3-2, came back to shutout Balboa Park, 2-0, on Friday.
Crossroads then met cross-town rival Brentwood on Tuesday. The
Roadrunners (12-5-5, 4-1-3) conclude the regular season this Thursday
against Whitney at 5:30 p.m. on their home field.
Crossroads’ Women’s Soccer team outshot Brentwood’s Archer School,
4-0, in scrimmage last week. Then, coming off an impressive 3-3 tie
with Campbell Hall, embarrassed Montclair Prep, 8-0. Crossroads and
Brentwood met on Tuesday night for Westside bragging rights. The Lady
Roadrunners (9-7-2, 4-1-1) will conclude their season against Whitney,
away at Cerritos Park East, at 3 p.m.
Another Santa Monica High School Football player announced his
college decisions. Chris Gary, exceptional wide receiver, who has also
rebounded well for the Vikings’ basketball squad as a starting
forward, will attend Georgetown to study law and play football.
Santa Monica College’s Men’s Basketball program is continuing to
hold on to second place in the Western State Conference with an 80-52
victory over West LA on Wednesday, January 30. The Corsairs hosted
Bakersfield on February 6, and will travel to Canyons on February 9,
and finally settle back at home on February 13 to host the WSC leader,
LA Valley, at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will more-than-likely
claim the WSC title.
UCLA Men’s Tennis team players Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcin
Matkowski won the ITA All-American championships and are now ranked
number one in the US.
UCLA Women’s Track and Field team placed first at the Illinois
Women’s Track and Field Invitational in Champaign, Illinois. The
Bruins, who are the back-to-back defending NCAA Indoor champions, had
three individual victories. Sheena Johnson, sophomore, won the 400m
dash (54.32), Darnesha Griffith, senior, won the high jump (5-10), and
Tracy O’Hara took the pole vault (13-6.25). The Bruin 4x400m relay
team (3:43.67) and the distance medley team (11:23.18) also placed
first. Johnson, Griffith, the relay team, and the medley, all earned
NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Junior Cari Soong placed second in
the 20 lb. weight throw (61-6.75) and also provisionally qualified for
nationals. |
