Santa Monica High School’s Men’s Soccer team is at 500 in league with a 2-1 victory over South Torrance and a scoreless tie versus Hawthorne. Santa Monica (8-6-7, 4-4-2) continues to rely on star senior forward Marin Zarate, who sets a new school record with every score.
Crossroads’ Men’s Soccer team, which fell last week to Campbell Hall, 3-2, came back to shutout Balboa Park, 2-0, on Friday. Crossroads then met cross-town rival Brentwood on Tuesday. The Roadrunners (12-5-5, 4-1-3) conclude the regular season this Thursday against Whitney at 5:30 p.m. on their home field.
Crossroads’ Women’s Soccer team outshot Brentwood’s Archer School, 4-0, in scrimmage last week. Then, coming off an impressive 3-3 tie with Campbell Hall, embarrassed Montclair Prep, 8-0. Crossroads and Brentwood met on Tuesday night for Westside bragging rights. The Lady Roadrunners (9-7-2, 4-1-1) will conclude their season against Whitney, away at Cerritos Park East, at 3 p.m.
Another Santa Monica High School Football player announced his college decisions. Chris Gary, exceptional wide receiver, who has also rebounded well for the Vikings’ basketball squad as a starting forward, will attend Georgetown to study law and play football.
Santa Monica College’s Men’s Basketball program is continuing to hold on to second place in the Western State Conference with an 80-52 victory over West LA on Wednesday, January 30. The Corsairs hosted Bakersfield on February 6, and will travel to Canyons on February 9, and finally settle back at home on February 13 to host the WSC leader, LA Valley, at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will more-than-likely claim the WSC title.
UCLA Men’s Tennis team players Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcin Matkowski won the ITA All-American championships and are now ranked number one in the US.
UCLA Women’s Track and Field team placed first at the Illinois Women’s Track and Field Invitational in Champaign, Illinois. The Bruins, who are the back-to-back defending NCAA Indoor champions, had three individual victories. Sheena Johnson, sophomore, won the 400m dash (54.32), Darnesha Griffith, senior, won the high jump (5-10), and Tracy O’Hara took the pole vault (13-6.25). The Bruin 4x400m relay team (3:43.67) and the distance medley team (11:23.18) also placed first. Johnson, Griffith, the relay team, and the medley, all earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Junior Cari Soong placed second in the 20 lb. weight throw (61-6.75) and also provisionally qualified for nationals.
