Freddie Ravel To Perform Here Thur.
The American Academy for Dance and Kindred Arts in
Santa Monica will present Latin jazz pianist/volcalist and composer
Freddie Ravel in “An Evening at the Academy” on Thursday, January 31.
He will be introduced by Gregorio Luke, executive director, Museum
of Latin American Art.
Described hy the Hollywood Reporter as “one of L.A.’s truly great
keyboardists” snd winner of the “Keyboardist of the Year” 2002
National Smooth Jazz Award, Ravel has performed all over the world —
from South Central L.A. to South America, Brunei to Thailand, and
Kyoto to Delhi.
The multi-platinum composer and former musical director for Earth,
Wind & Fire has worked with Quincy Jones, Sergio Mendes, Carl
Anderson, Tony Bennett, Peter White and Bobby McFerrin. He also
appeared with Madonna on the EVITA video as well as a guest soloist on
“Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.”
Born in Los Angeles of South American and East European parents,
the bi-lingual Ravel became interested in music when he was seven. He
went on to study jazz and classical composition at California State
University Northridge, graduating cum laude honors.
His debut album, Midnight Passion, was released on Polygram in
Japan in 1991. It went to the top of the charts in that area , and to
#6 in the U.S.
With Sol to Soul, his second recording for Verve/Polygram, Ravel
created a cultural bridge by combining the sounds of the “sol”
(Spanish for “sun”) of his Latin heritage with the “soul” of Rhythm &
Blues. It reached #14 nationwide.
Jazzis wrote, “Freddie Ravel’s multi-faceted concept collection Sol
to Soul is a thrill ride of eclecticism in which all the elements
blend beautifully. While acoustic piano is Ravel’s most charming tool,
we are showered with loads of production textures filled with world
beat fire as well as smooth originals such as “Sailaway” recalling
Gato Barbieri and an eloquent rendition of Ellington’s “In a
Sentimental Mood.”
A reception at the Academy, 3026 Nebraska Avenue in Santa Monica,
at 6:30 p.m. will precede the 6:30 p.m. concert. Friends of the
Academy subscriptions for ten events are available for $250. Tickets
to one event are $25.
