One-Woman Show Opens At Powerhouse
Written and performed by Alison Larkin, “The English
American” is based on the true story of the British adoptee’s search
for and reunion with her American birth mother in Bald Mountain,
Tennessee. Blending stand-up and theatre, it examines the differences
and similarities between English and American culture.
Previously performed at the Edinburgh Festival’s Assembly Rooms in
the UK, it will make its American debut on Sunday, January 27, at The
Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica, and play Sunday afternoons at 2
p.m., followed by a traditional English tea, through March 3.
Playing multiple roles, Larkin takes audiences on a journey of
discovery as she searches for her birth parents.
After a successful theatrical career in England, Larkin came to
America to search for her birth parents and stayed on to launch a
career in stand-up comedy in New York City. She was last seen on
Broadway in the Royal National Theatre’s Tony Award-winning production
of “Stanley.” As a stand-up comedian, she headlines regularly at The
Comedy Store in L.A. and recently co-starred in the new NPR adaptation
of “The Wonderful World of Oz” with Annette Bening and Phyllis Diller.
The Powerhouse is located at 3116 Second Street. For tickets, call
(310) 396-3680 ext. 6. Tickets are $15. |
