Center Stage

Little Richard and Chuck Berry

at The Universal Amphitheatre 1/26. As a preteen, I saw Chuck Berry do the duck walk on Don Kirshner’s rock concert, and life was never the same. To say that these two cornerstones of rock n’ roll are living legends, is just too simple. Layer upon layer of history has been laid down, each one contributing to this monster of a genre we call rock n’ roll. Little Richard has not only laid his layer with gusto, his brilliance is almost otherwordly. With his all out, balls to the wall wailing, whooping, and churning up a ruckus, Little Richard peels back the drapes to reveal a show we may never have had the priviledge to witness. Chuck Berry, with his fiery locomotive guitar licks, wraps his songs in the shiny red bow of pure fun. Some are rambling roads, some wild rides at breakneck speed, some part anthem, part ode, and some are soulful and haunting. If Little Richard is the wild and untamed part of rock n’ roll’s history, then Chuck Berry is the “Brown Eyed Handsome Man” driving the getaway car - Maybelline and Long Tall Sally riding shotgun.
