Reflecting the Concerns of the Community  January 16 - 22, 2001 Vol. 3, Issue 31

P.S.
What About the Children?

The Santa Monica City Council frequently trumpets its devotion to the community’s children. And yet…
Soon after the Third Street Promenade opened, the Council approved a 10 p.m. curfew for kids.
The City ignored skate-boarders’ requests for a skateboard area in Douglas Park, but approved a fly-fishing pond.
In its draft Civic Center Specific Center Plan (see first editorial this page), the Civic Center Working Group states, “playfields for large groups or organized sports should not be allowed,” though 3,000 kids take part in such sports and Samohi’s 3,400 students are woefully short of playing fields.
Either the Council should stop boasting about its devotion to children, or it should start including them in its plans and projects.
