Indian Art Show Opens Here This Weekend

Native American music and dance are featured

Guatemalan masks, Southwestern kachinas, Plains Indian textiles and Pacific Northwest carvings are among the many items to be shown at the Santa Monica Indian Art Show on Saturday and Sunday, January 12 and 13, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
Sometimes described as a cultural arts classroom, the two-day event sponsored by KR Martindale Show Management will feature a special concert by NAMMY award-winning Native American musician Xavier Quijas Yxayotl as well as other performers both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Reminiscent of trading posts, nearly 100 displays representing art items of daily life among Native American cultures, including pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial periods, will be included in the show. Among the items to be shown are the only remaining materials from certain indigenous societies. Contemporary artists will also be on hand to discuss the artistic traditions their works reflect. No sacred items will be displayed or sold.
Martindale, sponsor of the country’s largest Indian Art shows, has particular affection for the Santa Monica Indian Art Show because when he was a boy he attended it and was inspired to begin collecting arrowheads and moccasins. A member of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association, he is dedicated to preserving native art through cultural shows such as this one.
Tickets are $7 for adults, and free for children 16 and under. The show will be open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for more information, call KR Martindale Show Management at 800-656-9278.
