Race Is Subject Of SMC Panel

Santa Monica College will present a panel discussion inspired by the New York Times Pulitzer Prize-winning series, “Race As It Is Lived in America,” at 7 p.m. Friday, November 16.
The Times series explored the complexities of race as made manifest in the lives of individuals ranging from soldiers to factory workers to filmmakers.
On Friday night’s panel will be Steve Holmes, a Times reporter who worked on the series, Dr. David Horne of the Pan African Studies at Cal State Northridge who filed reports for “Turning Point” magazine from the international conference on racism in Durban, South Africa, and journalist Veronica Villafane, western regional director for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
The discussion is sponsored by the college’s Communication Department and the SMC Associates.
Admission to the discussion, in room 214 of the Art Complex on the main campus, is free. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The discussion will be preceded by a reception at 6 p.m. in the Art Complex patio.
