Highlights

Rock/Pop

The Shakes, Tracy & The Hindenburg Ground Crew, Les Payne Product at Al’s Bar 6/7. Journey to the bowels of downtown L.A., where the graffiti’d walls of Al’s are legendary. Pop open an entry level beer and find a place to sit or stand, then watch as the mayhem and madness enfolds. You might even find yourself part of it, if you’re lucky…
Januaries, Persephonies Bees (S.F.), Gush, Cornflower at The Fold (Silverlake Lounge) 6/7. Local Sexbomb-Baby Debbie Diamond oozes glam-kitsch while crooning soft pop melodies, while Persephone’s Bees mix a “Queen’s theatrics, dreamy French pop and the soft psychedelia of the Strawberry Alarm Clock”
Tortoise, Nobukazu Takemura, Jet Black Crayon at Royce Hall (UCLA) 6/8 KCRW presents this Spaceland production of Chicago-based Tortoise and more. You can also catch Tortoise’s eight members’ “exploratory and organic sounds,” on KCRW’s (89.9fm) “Morning Becomes Eclectic” at 11:15am, on Thurs., 6/7. For more info, go to spacelandproductions.com

Jazz, Classical

Bob Dorough, John Chiodini, Jim Hughart, Denny Seiwell at The Jazz Bakery 6/7. Bring a date, sit back, relax, and take in the intoxicating sounds of vocal master Bob Dorough, with Jim Hughart on guitar and Denny Deiwell on drums.
James Intveld’s Swing Sinners at The Derby 6/7. James Intveld has been a local staple for the last two decades. His latest incarnation, The Swing Sinners, has been causing quite an uproar. Check it out — and don’t forget to dress to the nines.

Readings,
Performances

Gerald Locklin, Patricia Cherin at Dutton’s Brentwood, 6/10, 2pm. From the outside, L.A. can seem like a glitzy world of glamour and snipped waxy faces on Rodeo Drive whipping around in Mercedes SUVs. For those of us who actually live here, life is often a very different story. From dusty railroad tracks and trashy streets, to cherry lipstick’d booze hounds, rough trade and frayed street ramblers on the docks, yes, life in back alley L.A. is certainly different from Hollywood’s ever-technicolor world. Locklin, a Long Beach professor who taught Dave Alvin and was a friend of Bukowski, has been compared to William Carlos Williams and Frank O’Hara, for his casual style, but words are all his own.
Jack Skelley, Matthew Byloos at Beyond Baroque, 6/8, 7:30pm: Jack Skelley, punk rock L.A. alt-lit fixture since 1979, joins forces with artist and fiction writer Matthew Byloos tonight. Skelley wrote, (among others, including a notorious poem to Marie Osmond), “Fear of Kathy Acker,” and published “Barney,” a very cool lit journal that skated smoothly along the edge of raw and scholarly, and introduced many fine new writers. Byloos co-edited “Fishwrap,” a “saucy and sexy literary art mag,” and is described as a “cross between Donald Barthelme and David Cronenberg.”
Electricity Generation and Distribution at Science & The Public Interest (Midnight Special) 6/12, 7:30pm. Sandy Elster, Jim Warf and Shel Plotkin discuss California’s energy crisis.
