Highlights

Rock/Pop

Hal Willner’s Harry Smith Project continues at UCLA’s Royce Hall, April 26. Elvis Costello, Beck, Marianne Faithful, Philip Glass, PJ Harvey, T-Bone Burnett & Sam Phillips, Todd Rundgren, David Thomas, Van Dyke Parks, David Johansen, Percy Heath, Steve Earle, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, The Folksmen, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Bob Neuwirth, Gavin Friday, Bill Frisell, Smokey Hormel, Don Byron, Victoria Williams, and many others make up this stellar lineup. Having cut his teeth on Saturday Night Live during its glory days, Hal Willner, as music producer, brought unsung heroes and music gods alike to grace the SNL stage. In 1981, he organized a compilation LP Amarcord Nino Rota that brought together seemingly disparate musicians to pay homage to the man who created the musical poetry for Fellini’s movies. This is Willner’s brilliance, bringing together musicians from a variety of genres with the gestalt of mutual musical love for some overlooked composer, or a fresh appraisal of someone already celebrated.
The Blue Shadows at The Derby 4/30. Also known as the “Red Devils,” the Blue Shadows’ long standing Monday night sardine-packed shows at the old King King were notorious. On any given night, you might find legendary sax god Lee Alvin wailin’ with the band, while Bruce Springsteen or Mick Jagger waltzed past the long line to see what all the fuss was about.
Yngwie J. Malmsteen at The House of Blues. The thinking man’s classically trained guitar god/heavy metler, hope he plays his brilliant version of “Wipeout.”

Jazz, Classical

Roy Haynes at Catalina Bar & Grill 4/26 –4/29. This magical drummer’s jazz resume is astounding. He’s played with the likes of Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and the list goes on. A must see for any jazz lover. Featuring Ron Blake on sax, Dwayne Burno on bass and Jason Lindner on piano.
Larry Golding’s B3 Organ Trio at The Jazz Bakery (Thu 4/26 - Sun 4/29)
