Highlights

Rock/Pop

Psychedelic Furs at HOB 4/13. Back when the teen-phenom of the “brat pack” first hit in the 80’s, thank god that teen movies had soundtracks made up of songs by adult bands, you know, real bands, not the corporately packaged nightmares that pass for music nowadays. If you only know the Furs from the movie copped from the title of their song, Pretty in Pink, you deserve to broaden your horizons. Combining the art school rock and glamour of Roxy Music, the brooding soundscape of the Velvet Underground, and the vigor of punk rock, the Furs charted out into their own areas. Their trademark sound of the sneering sandpaper vocalist Richard Butler and the wailing sax, runs into you like a train, or perhaps even, a pop epiphany.
Audiotistic: LTJ Bukem, Cut Chemist Meets Shortcut, Common, Jurassic-5, Dilated People’s, Q Bert, The Beat Junkies, Blackalicious, Visionaries, MC Supernatural, Garth Trinidad at The Long Beach Convention Center 4/14. The man, the musician, the DJ, the head of Good Looking records, live and direct from England, LTJ Bukem considered one of the world’s top dee-jays, leads this mind-numbing absolutely humongous seemingly endless list of world-class DJ’s from across the globe. Last year’s version of this event drew 37,000 people. Be prepared to rave on from 4pm to 4:30 am. (audiotistic.com)
Chaos U.K. at The Whisky 4/15. This first generation hard-core punk band originally from Bristol, England may have set a record in punk rock band-om. These guys have been together since 1979 and other than a short 3-year hiatus in the late 80’s, they’re still together! Chaos U.K. is possibly the hardest working punk rock band in show business, they’ll will make your ears bleed with their heavily political agitprop.

Jazz, Classical

Andrew Hill at The Jazz Bakery 4/12 through 4/15. He’s a mysterious Dark Horse of Jazz, popping up throughout the years to grace the public with his dark, haunting style, he started playing at the tender age of 6 in Chicago. He’s studied under German classical composer Paul Hindesmith, played with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dinah Washington, Roland Kirk and released his masterpiece in ’64, “Point of Departure.” Don’t miss this one.

Reading, Performances

The Figures at Beyond Baroque, 4/13 & 14. One of America’s more extraordinary small presses presents editor GEOFFREY YOUNG, who says “From the beginning there was the pleasure of working with poets, of close reading. Then there was an abiding interest in the aesthetics of the book (size, type, layout, cover art, etc.), and there was the knowledge that if we didn’t publish these books (the small presses, in general), there was almost no chance that above-ground publishing houses in New York would. Thus, the Figures was born to provide inexpensive, well-made books by a new generation of writers.” (see Beyond Baroque’s listings for more info.)
Henry Rollins El Rey Theatre 4/12. Uber macho machine-man Rollins is a cottage industry unto himself. His small press 2.13.61 has published everyone from rock stars Nick Cave, Exene, and Lydia Lunch to local heroine Ellyn Maybe, and is due some props for bringing the words of other obscure or unsung heroes to the published page. His own spoken word rants are notorious for inciting ripples of giggles throughout the crowd via his cutting wit and sarcastic humor, and now it’s official, this show is being billed as “comedy.”
