Highlights
Rock/Pop
Xu Xu Fang, Double Naught Spy Car, Hollow Log at The Knitting Factory 3/29. All acoustic show, (main stage) with Xu Xu Fang, “a nine-piece “multimedia-collective-cum-Raymond-Chandler-
spoof” ensemble. For this show, they’ll be performing an entire film score to the film. DJ Evol Dub, aka Dchannel/Dtox/Funtime Andy, fills your dumpster while quoting the great thinkers.” Hollow Log, a “spinoff” of sorts from the fellas that brought you Double Naught madness, celebrate the release of their new CD ‘Catch A Caber’, and bring on the Celtic, Arabic, Cajun and Hillibilly styles. Go to: flamencoshoes.com/ hollowlog.html for more.
Tom Paxton at McCabe’s 3/31. Folk legend Paxton honed his chops in the original old-school folk scene of Greenwich Village. He is one of those forces that keeps moving forward, having released more than 32 albums over the years on all of the folk labels that matter — Elektra, Vanguard, Sugarhill, etc. He’s still relevant today, with neo-folkies like Ani DiFranco giving him props and calling him, “…the coolest” along with the fact that Paxton is quite possibly the most covered folk artist ever. Paxton’s songs have been recorded by an amazing roster of artists, including Pete Seeger,
Arlo Guthrie, The Kingston Trio, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Placido Domingo, and the Pogues.
Akiko Yano at the Knitting Factory 3/3. Akiko Yano – little known in the west by the record buying public, Japanese pianist and vocalist Yano has nevertheless carved out quite an impressive niche, with American and European musicians being both her fans and cohorts, including John Zorn, Pat Methany, Adrian Beleu, David Sylvian and the UK Band Japan, Thomas Dolby, Charlie Haden, Nana Vasconcelos, Lyle Mays. Back in 1976, the band Little Feat backed up her up on her first album. She and Kate Bush are the progenitors of the whole female/pianist phenom a la Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, et. al.
