Library Spotlights Sexton's Poetry
Actress Marie Chambers will perform "An Excess of Light: The Poetry of Anne Sexton" in the Main Santa Monica Public Library Auditorium, Saturday, March 10, at 3 p.m.
Anne Sexton won a Pulitzer Prize for her poetry in 1967 and continued to publish until her death in 1974. According to Chambers, the program is meant to "remind us of the extraordinary redemptive power of writing, of being a truth-teller, and being a woman."
Chambers, a Los Angeles actress, dialect coach and teacher, created her program several years ago.
Among the poems by Sexton in the piece are "That day," "Sylvia," "Death," and "Consorting with the Angels."
A discussion will follow the reading.
"An Excess of Light" is being presented at the Library in honor of Women's History Month by CelebrateWomen, which celebrates the lives of women in live performance. Additional support has been provided by the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library. The program is free. For more information, call (310) 458-8600.
