Schindler Apartments Are Site of Exhibition
This weekend, R. M. Schindler's Mackey apartments will be transformed into from a private residence into a public space for an exhibition of art.
Using the building's windows, walls and exterior areas for video and animation projections, as well as architectural installations, a group of 18 international artists will present works that "engage the social and psychological issues implicit in Modernist architecture."
Curated by art historian Eugenio Valdes Figueroa in collaboration with the MAK Center Artists and Architects in Residence, the "exhibition/intervention," which is called "This Is My House," will be presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 6 to 10 p.m.
"This Is My House" is the opening segment of a three-part MAK Center project, "In Between: Art and Architecture," which will run through September 2 and will present works by contemporary artists in the Mackey Apartments and the Schindler House on Kings Road.
Part II, opening on March 14, will be shown at the Schindler House and in public spaces around West Hollywood. Part III, opening on July 20, will present sculptural installations on the grounds of the Schindler House.
In his 1939 design for the Mackey apartments at 1137 South Cochran Avenue in Los Angeles, Rudolf Schindler sought to incorporate natural light in the interiors -- through a remarkable articulation of geometric volumes, as well as wide window openings. According to the exhibition organizers, "This Is My House" builds on the voyeurist and exhibitionist implications inherent in a transparent facade."
With "This Is My House," the artists take on a variety of issues, using the apartments as both screen and site.
This exhibition has been planned in conjunction with "The Architecture of R.M. Schindler," which opens next week at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and "Shaping the Great City: Modern Architecture in Central Europe 1890-1937" now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
