Noted Swing Musicians Will Perform at Jazz Forum Sunday
Widely known for his lyrical clarinet solos on the soundtrack of "Northern Exposure," Abe Most and his quintet will perform at the Jazz Forum in Santa Monica on Sunday.
Other members of the quintet are Sam Most on tenor sax, Dick Shanahan on drums, Ray Sherman on piano and Putter Smith on bass.
A studio musician at 20th Century Fox for 25 years and a jazz legend, Most played with Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, Billy Vaughn and Bob Crosby.
Eminent jazz critic Leonard Feather has described Sam Most, Abe's brother, as the first truly creative jazz flutist. Shanahan was a driving force in the bands of Brown, Crosby and Charlie Barnet. He has also performed on numerous movie soundtracks. Sherman has performed with many local jazz combos, played piano on the Time-Life Big Bands series and participated in the "Pete Kelly Big 7" recreation. Smith has performed with jazz masters Art Pepper, Dick Cary, Jack Sheldon and Thelonious Monk as well as playing with the Percy Faith, Ray Anthony and Bob Crosby big bands.
Other musicians are invited to sit in before and after the Most quintet performs.
Swing will dominate Sunday's program, which takes place at the Elks Lodge, 1040 Pico Boulevard from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for members, $8 for non-members and $2.50 for students 12 to 18 with ID. Net proceeds are used to underwrite music scholarships for young musicians. For more information, call (310) 477-9955.
