Westside:
Peter Stampel at McCabe’s. Peter Stampfel, one of the Holy Modal Rounders, sometime Fug and now decades later out on his own. An aficionado of folk music and bluegrass, Stamfel (and crew) have taken trad ascoustic music and turned it on it's ear. Imagine Marcel Duchamp, papa of the Dadaists hooking up with the HeeHaw TV show music crew and you've some idea of Stampfel's wonderfully absurd take on music. The only time this imaginative blend ever creeped into the pop consciousness was when the song, "(We Like) Boobs a Lot" became an old-school FM radio hit. If you were there in the day, you don't wanna miss this show and if all this is new to you, then don't miss the boat for this rare performance.
Candye Kane at The Culver Saloon. Blues belter, sweet country crooner, scat jazz gal and sex-positive activist, this full figured gal just returned from her smash European tour and is now making the rounds throughout the US. A songwriter in her own right who’s titles include "7 Men a Week," (on men) "I’m In Love With A Girl," (on bisexuality) and "Three Strikes and You’re Out," (on spousal abuse). This bawdy, gutsy woman is sort of a cross between early Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Koko Taylor and Debbie Harry. Catch her now, before she leaves town again.
Stone Poets, Glide, Cleveland (Formerly Agnes Gooch), Horny Toad at 14 Below
Quetzal, DJ Haul, Clyde’s Ride at Temple Bar
Cry On Cue, Lindsay Russell, Startlight Drifters at Rusty’s Surf Ranch
‘Round Town:
Dave Alvin & The Guilty Men, Los Straitjackets at The Roxy. Singer, songwriter, poet, producer and "King of California," Dave Alvin brings his gritty, soulful, down home brand of thoughtful roots rock to the Sunset Strip tonight. Whether or not scenesters and shmoozers will appreciate his thinking-man’s brand of rock and roll remains to be seen, but there’ll bound to be lots of old friends and now-famous fans sprinkled in the audience, and perhaps even a surprise jam session ‘round closing time...
The Dickies, ADZ, St. Walkin’ Cheetahs at The Foothill. Hurry hurry, hurry, these vintage punk rockers are back once again and bound to play such favorities as "Stuck in A Pagoda With Tritia Toyota" whipping the crowd into a frenzy and creating chaos and thrills just like back in the eighties....
Sparks at The Key Club. Here’s a funny little anecdote from none other than the Mirror’s own CD critic, Tony Peyser: "Years ago, I ran into Russell outside a movie theater, introduced myself and pointed out that we both went to Palisades High. I then mentioned that while I was student body president there, I helped arrange for his first band, Half Nelson, to perform at the school. Russell didn't remember the gig but asked how the show was. I blurted out, "Terrible" and suddenly wished I'd been more
diplomatic. He stared at me a while and then replied, "You know ... we haven't changed." Funny thing is, I actually remember Half Nelson!
Saturday, Aug 26
Westside:
Marshall Crenshaw, Bruce Henderson at McCabe’s. Relegated to that short list of musician's musicians, Marshall Crenshaw has eluded the fame and glory many feel is his due. With a slew of album releases and a TV project this year, he is back on the music radar. Crenshaw did the music for a PBS documentary on baseball's Yogi Berri, "Déjà vu All Over Again." He's got a new album self-deprecatedly titled #447 (as in, "another damn record from this guy!") on Razor & Tie, two albums from Rhino Records, the compilation, This Is Easy! The Best Of Marshall Crenshaw and the eponymous Marshall Crenshaw, his 1982 debut remastered and fortified with bonus tracks. His #447 album is right in sync with the McCabe's ethos, eschewing microchip-based equipment and recording processes, to boot, it was recorded on vintage equipment using as many tube-based things as possible to get an old record, vintage sound. Put THAT in your roots rock pipe and smoke it!
