GROOVES

To list your event, email: grooves@usa.com
Thursday, January 6
Dodo Munoko & La Rumba Band at the West End. African beat you can count on. 1301 Fifth St. Santa Monica. 310.313.3293
YESKA at Dino's Cocktail Club, The Viper Room. Dig their latin beat and get lost in the groovy kitsch-cool of Dino's Cocktail Club. These guys have been around a long time and they're still rockin' like Pick-a-peppa in July. 8852 Sunset Blvd. 310.358.1880
Roseanne, Dean Del Rey, Kane at the Mint. Yes, it's THAT Roseanne. The one who immortalized frumpy housewifery and gave those less than perfect inspiration and comfort knowing that not every superstar need look like a super model -- that is, until she got a makeover, plastic surgery, threw out her frumpy old sweats and squeezed into a pair of leopardskin spandex, flipping her new fall down over her eyes and attempting to belt out the blues. Go girl, be all you can be, just turn down the mic and don't get mad if we stare in disbelief when you do "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by the Animals and you can barely hold the tune (as seen on The Late Late show). You gotta hand it to her though, it takes guts to get out there and sing badly. The novelty of it is worth the price of admission--and I hear she's got some top notch musicians backing her up. It's worth a peek. She's on a double bill with Dean Del Rey featuring members of Sheryl Crow, Counting Crows and the Wallflowers. 6010 Pico. 323.954.8241
Mark Murphy with the Alan Broadbent Trio at the Jazz Bakery. Top jazz cat Mark Murphy joins Alan Broadbent for an evening of revelry and reverence. 3233 Helms Ave. Culver City. 310.271.9039
No Time at Luna Park. With such zany hits as "Eat All The Old People" and "Smell My Finger," you can guess the demographics of these guys. In the spirit of Dr. Demento meets Porkys, there's bound to be lots of goofy KROQ lovers in dayglo running around this classy joint tonight. If you miss the show you can also check them out at www.notime.org 665 N. Robertson. 310.652.0611.
Tex Twill, The Fressa's at Spaceland. Spaceland features consistently cool, rockin' shows and this night'll be no exception. 1717 Silverlake Blvd. 213.833 2843
MILK at Fais Do Do. Play some groovy ping pong, watch a little video, dance to your favorite cheesy rock idol songs and rub elbows with Mia & Judy as guest DJ Woody spins everything from Guns and Roses to KC & The Sunshine Band to Bowie and The Sex Pistols. 5253 W. Adams Blvd. 310.764.0763.
Friday, January 7
Bamboleo at the Conga Room. One of the hottest Cuban bands is in town tonight at the pricey, trendy but elegant Conga room. 5364 Wilshire Blvd. 323.938.1696
Marlowe, Billion Stars, Sticky Fingers at 14 Below. Just in case you missed them the first time around, Sticky Fingers brings you the Stones revisited at 14 Below tonight. 1348 14th St., Santa Monica 310.451.5040
Brian Jonestown Massacre, Space Twins, Persephone's Bees at Spaceland. Another post punk paradise for the loud crowd to get lost in the mayhem of crunch and grind in the season of post holiday blues. 1717 Silverlake Blvd. 213.833 2843
Megadeath at the House of Blues. When Megadeath toured with Spinal Tap, most thought Megadeath was the spoof band. Bring your earplugs for a metler's holiday. (Also on Sat.) 8430 Sunset Strip 323.848.5100 www.hob.com
Babyland, Third Grade Teacher at the Coconut Teaszer. There's nothing like a little punk rock to get your ire up, and the 'tease is offering up decent double bill for those in need of a little 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4!!!! 8117 Sunset 323 654.4773
Saturday, January 8
James Intveld at the Culver Saloon. If Elvis and Patsy Cline had a son who was raised by Merle Haggard and schooled by Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry, perhaps he might sound a little like Mr. Intveld. At once a rollicking rocker, at other times a tender crooner. He was featured in the John Waters' film Crybaby, and he usually steals the show at the yearly Elvis Bash with his dead ringers. Catch him tonight before the big show at the House of Blues on Sunday. 11513 Washington Blvd., Culver City. 310.391.1519 http://people.we.mediaone.net/chuckandco
Candye Kane at Cozy's. Recently featured on the House of Blues' compilation of top female blues performers, in the company of such heavyweights as Bessie Smith and Etta James, Candye Kane has certainly paid enough dues to be included in that batch of hard-hitting, no holds barred bunch of gals. Whether she's belting out one of her original blues songs, yodeling a self-penned country tune, or swingin' with the best of 'em, she's come a long way from her east LA roots as a single mom supporting herself as a stripper and X-rated model. Unashamed and free-spirited (she once refused CBS top guns who demanded she become a born again Christian and denounce her past in order to get a record deal), Ms. Kane has persevered where so many might have fallen. Just back from her European tour and working on a new Rounder Records release, Candye Kane proves that sensationalism might get you noticed, but talent keeps 'em coming back for more. 14058 Ventura. 818.986.6000
Downset at the Roxy. Local punk wunderkinds and critics' darlings rock the house tonight with all the piss and vinegar you might expect. 9009 Sunset. 310.276.2222
John Doe, Eleni Mandell at Largo. Ex-X punk/folk/rock-god cum actor John Doe manages to sound just a little wistful and sad even when he's blowing the roof off the house with a gut wrenching howl. There's also something so sincere about him that you'll forgive him his flops and keep coming back for just one more. 432 N Fairfax. 323.852.1073
Johnny Dowd at Jack's Sugar Shack. A little grizzled but still just as fine, catch him tonight on Hollywood and Vine. 1707 N. Vine. 323.466.7005
Sunday, January 9
15th Annual Elvis Birthday Bash at the House of Blues. The folks at the ol' House o' Blues are being mighty secretive about this one. They're not announcing who's playing, but I can tell you that in the past, such luminaries as Dwight Yoakum and Tom Petty have graced the stage of this stellar event. From local rockabillies like Russell Scott, Big Sandy, Rosie Flores, Candye Kane and James Intveld to legends like Wanda Coleman, Ray Campi and Tony Conn they all usually wind up here sooner or later, so be prepared. 8430 Sunset Strip 323.848.5100 www.hob.com
Matinee Children's Show with Peter Himmelman at McCabe's. He'll most likely be doing some songs from his children's CD titled "My Best Friend Is A Salamander." 11am, but get there early, his last children’s show sold out. 3101 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 310 828.4403
