Mirror Columnist Finds The Perfect Niche

Laurie Cohn, who writes “In Her Opinion” for the Mirror, reports that her family and friends are grateful that she has finally found a regular outlet for her “very strong views.”
Born in New York, Cohn moved with her family to Los Angeles when she was eight. At 18, she went to UC Berkeley, where she majored in English. One of her professors asked his students why they were English majors, noting that they weren’t going to make much money when they graduated. Cohn says that, to her surprise, she actually uses what she learned in college.
Graduating with a B.A. in English, Cohn went to work as a book editor in San Francisco for “Lexikos/Don’t Call It Frisco Press.”
She then became a television producer for “California North,” a magazine show about people and events in Sonoma and Marin counties.
She moved to Santa Monica eight years ago and is currently re-searcher and co-author of “What A Year It Was” book series and producer of “What a Decade It Was” video series.
A “yoga enthusiast” for 11 years, she taught Hatha Yoga for six and a half years. She loves to travel abroad and continues to travel alone “armed only with a backpack, good hiking boots and a prayer.”
Her favorite cities are Kathmandu, Nepal, Benares, India, Jerusalem, and San Francisco. The highest place she’s ever been is Throng La Pass on the Annapurna Circuit and the lowest place is the Dead Sea.
In Santa Monica, she travels by bike and kayak and on foot, hiking in the mountains, walking around Santa monica, Venice and Marina del Rey.
She lives in Ocean Park and continues to “hone writing skills,” writing short stories and essays about her travels, taking classes with various teachers at UCLA Extension and Beyond Baroque with Venice resident and Beat poet Philomene Long
