Santa Monica Classic Underway

Today more than 3,000 runners will gather in Santa Monica for the 8th Annual Santa Monica Classic 5K and 10K races—both of which finish just steps away from the Santa Monica Pier. The festivities will continue throughout the morning at the post-race expo on the Pier, with an exciting lineup of vendors promoting the latest in nutrition and fitness and offering free giveaways.

Samohi Stumbles In First Round Playoff Loss Against Knight

Samohi (20-11) entered the first round of the CIF playoffs without star ace senior pitcher Connor Greene on the mound, and the absence of the Vikings leader was felt as the Vikings lost to Knight (20-5) 8-3 at home Thursday afternoon. Samohi head coach Kurt Schwengel was very pleased with his team’s performance for the 2013 season, but saddened to see the season end the way it did. “You have to tip your hat off to them, especially to Cabral,” said Schwengel. “The last thing we expect here is to see a ball fly over the left field fence so that was quite a poke. We had a great season and it will be awfully hard to see these seniors leave.”

SMC Triple Jumper Places Sixth In State Finals

SMC's Carzell VIckers, a 6'4" 190 pound athlete, competed in the California Track and Field Championships placing sixth in the triple jump event with a distance of 14.43 meters in San Mateo Saturday afternoon. Vickers holds a personal triple jump performance record of 14.73 meters gleaned at the Western State Conference Championships on April 19 and this jump ranks him fourth in the State of California.

Samohi Wrestler Qualifies To Wrestle In Austrian Open

Samohi sophomore girls wrestler Madison "Maddy" Tung placed fourth in the Fila Cadet Body Bar Women's National Championships held in Lakeland, Florida Saturday and Sunday wrestling for both the Titan Mercury and the Santa Monica Bay Wrestling Clubs. Tung wrestled in the Fila Juniors competition, held at the Body Bar Women's National Championships, in a tournament that saw her qualify to be an alternate on the Fila Cadet National Team. Santa Monica High School Wrestling head coach Mark Black said that Tung did well in the Body Bar Women's National Championships wrestling at 108 pounds.

Archer Softball Advances In CIF Playoffs With Win Over La Puente

The Archer School for Girls (10-10) softball team has advanced in the CIF Division V playoffs despite a tough schedule and numerous injuries on the Panthers 2013 season after playing only one year of softball in the vaunted Alpha League. The Panthers varsity softball team unloaded for 17 hits and 15 runs en route to a 15-2 opening round victory over La Puente High School Tuesday in the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

SMC Basketball Sensation David Nwaba To Play For Cal Poly

Corsairs basketball sensation David Nwaba, a 6-4 forward, will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on a full athletic scholarship after signing a letter of intent to play on the Mustangs basketball program earlier this month. Santa Monica College basketball head coach Jerome Jenkins believes that the Big West is where Nwaba belongs and that his presence will be felt as soon as he steps onto the court. "I think he is an unbelievable athlete and that Cal Poly got a great steal," said Jenkins.

Santa Monica Rugby Club Teams Head To State Championships

The U14 and the U16 Boys of the Santa Monica Rugby Club won their 2013 Southern California Youth Rugby championship matches at Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon and will play in the California State Cup in San Francisco Saturday, May 25. In the opening ten minutes of the U14 game between the SMRC and Santa Clarita, the Dolphins were pinned in their own half by the Tigers, but thunderous tackles from the Dolphins prevented the Tigers from scoring.

New Roads Baseball Treads Over Coastal Christian 21-5 In First Round Of CIF Playoffs

It was the bottom of the first inning and New Roads (8-6) was ahead 2-0 when Jaguars slugger Pedro Dupree stepped up to bat against pitcher Shane Hampton of Coastal Christian (5-8) in the first round of the CIF Playoffs at home Tuesday afternoon. Dupree connected with the baseball sending the Conquerors outfield racing backwards in a frantic attempt to recover the ball and throw it home, but by then they were too late and Dupree had already circled the bases to make the game 5-0. By the end of the game, the the Jaguars had extended the score to 21-5.

Samohi Swimmers Excel In CIF Championships

Samohi swimmers Brendan Casey and Cathy Gomez competed in the 2013 CIF-SS Division II Championships (NFHS) at the Riverside Aquatics Complex in Riverside all day Saturday representing the Vikings and excelling in the the 500 freestyle swim competition. Santa Monica High School Swimming head coach Matthew Flanders said that he was impressed by how much Casey and Gomez have improved throughout the course of the season. "Those two have done a fantastic job for us this season," said Flanders.

Samohi Holds Off Furious Culver City Rally To Win Ocean League Title

It was the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two outs. The Santa Monica Vikings (20-10, 10-0) needed just one more out to cap off another victory and clinch their spot in the CIF playoffs against rival Culver City (18-6, 8-2), and the Vikings did just that winning the game 7-4 at home Thursday afternoon. Entering the final inning, the Vikings had held a comfortable 7-2 lead needing only three outs to complete their perfect record within league play. But with sophomore Andrew Brown on the mound for the final inning, things quickly started to take a turn for the worse and the Vikings slowly saw their lead shrink away.

Samohi Track And Field Qualifies 13 Athletes For CIF Playoffs

The Samohi boys and girls track team qualified 13 athletes to go on to CIF after competing in the Ocean League finals at Beverly Hills High school Thursday, May 2 in a meet that determined which athletes would move on to CIF prelims. Samohi Track and Field head coach Tanya Fisher said that the Vikings competed against strong opponents and are now hoping to qualify for the CIF Finals. "The athletes had to come in first, second or third in the league, and qualify with a tough CIF standard," said Fischer.

Pacifica Christian Edges Out Archer In Softball 2-1

It was the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs in the softball game and runners on first and third. Pacifica Christian's (11-3) pitcher Chandler Dolan had pitched a near perfect game allowing only one run while Archer High School's (10-9) pitcher Carolyn Zaccharo had allowed only two. Archer's Allie Simon had just circled the bases scoring the Panthers first run of the game after being batted in by her teammate Rebecca Samuelson.

Pacifica Christian Girls Softball Beats Oakwood 17-7

Pacifica Christian (10-3) defeated Oakwood (1-13) 17-7 in a game that saw the Seawolves connect with the ball by the third inning to drive out the Gorillas at home Tuesday afternoon. Pacifica Christian Head Coach Mike Dolan said thought that the Seawolves played some good softball. "The girls all got an opportunity to hit and 14 of our 16 reached base safely," said Dolan.

Santa Monica Rugby Teams Head To So Cal Youth Rugby Championships

The U14, U16, and U18 Boys teams from the Santa Monica Rugby Club won their semi-final matches Saturday and with the sweep, the teams will advance to the Southern California Youth Rugby Championship to be held Saturday, May 11th, at Cal State University Fullerton. SMRC Director of Youth Rugby Kilian Kerwin said that he thought it was a great day for the Santa Monica rugby club. "It was a great day for our club," said Kerwin. "Three exciting victories for our youth teams and then a big win by our men's team in the first round of the National Championships."

16 SMC Athletes Qualify For So Cal Championships

The Santa Monica College track and field team is anticipating the Southern California Championships that will be held this weekend at Antelope Valley College after sixteen Corsairs qualified to participate in the track and field event. SMC track and field head coach Larry Silva said that many of the Corsairs have gotten better over the course of their junior college careers.

With league play quickly coming to an end, Santa Monica (17-10, 7-0) added a seventh straight victory against rival Beverly Hills (10-12, 4-3) to continue the Vikings dominance within the Ocean League and cruising to a 6-1 victory at home Tuesday afternoon. Samohi pitcher Alex Gironda, who took the mound against Beverly Hills, said that he did not like the Normans. “It felt good beating Beverly Hills, especially because I hate them,” said Gironda. “They were making contact today, but our defense did a great job helping me out and that’s all you can ask for.”

Santa Monica Rugby Club Sends Youth Teams To So Cal Semi-Finals

All three Santa Monica Rugby Club (SMRC) boys teams won playoff matches to advance to the Southern California Youth Rugby Championship semi-finals round starting with the U18 SMRC team against Hawaiian Gardens starting at 10:45 a.m. at Webster Elementary Saturday afternoon. Head Youth Coach Kilian Kerwin of the U18 SMRC said that the predominant play of the boys and their advancement in the rugby playoffs was due to the hard work of the SMRC coaching staff. "Our superb youth coaching staff has prepared our boys well and it is not surprising that our upper division teams have all advanced through the playoffs," said Kerwin.

New Roads Crushes Wildwood In Baseball 9-1

The New Roads (6-5-1) baseball team defeated Wildwood 9-1 for the second time this season at Clover Park Friday afternoon. The Jaguars are now currently in second place at 4-2 in the Coastal League behind Rolling Hills (8-5). Jaguars pitcher Spencer Backlar pitched a complete game with six strikeouts while Christian Vibiano led the Jaguars with two hits, two runs scored, and two stolen bases including a straight steal of home in the fourth inning.

Former Samohi Quarterback Ryan Katz To Play For Denver Broncos

Former Santa Monica High School quarterback Ryan Katz signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent in the NFL draft on a three-year contract Saturday afternoon after blossoming into a star quarterback at San Diego State during the 2012 college football season. Katz said that he got a call on Saturday from Denver in the fifth round of the NFL draft and was asked to be one of the 15 undrafted free agents of the 23 players chosen by the Broncos in the NFL draft. "Just leading up to it, I had about ten teams that had showed interest in me including the Broncos after pro day," said Katz.

SMC tennis stars Juliana Nelkin and Kaori Tsuda led the Corsairs by reaching the finals in the 2013 CCCAA individual playoffs to determine the California Community College State Champions beating Orange Coast College's Michelle Cyrus and Mia Hashimoto 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals at The Ojai in Ojai, Calif. But Nelkin and Tsuda lost to Sarah Anderson and Victoria Vo of Fullerton College in the doubles event finals.

Santa Monica High School sophomore wrestler Maddy Tung won first place in the Women’s Western Junior Regional Championship wrestling competition in Las Vegas, NV Wednesday, April 17 and with the win qualifies to go to the Junior and Cadet National Championships. Santa Monica High School wrestling head coach Mark Black said that Tung is a fierce competitor when wrestling. "She has a huge competitive spirit and doesn't like to lose," said Black. "She takes care of things on the mat."

The Sunshine 12 Westside girls volleyball team won the Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA) National Qualifier at the Anaheim Convention Center Sunday afternoon after an amazing weekend tournament that sported twists and turns and saw the girls pressured to win three matches in a row before they won the championship game in the gold round. Sunshine 12 Westside girls volleyball Head Coach Lenka Jamrichova said that the girls gave it their all in order to win the SCVA tournament. "Going 1-2 on the first day was not ideal but I still knew we could get back into it if we played like we did in St. Louis and in the last regional tournament," said Jamrichova.

Vikings Surf In Oceanside Championship Surf Contest

The Samohi surf team found themselves locked inside the A-Frame as they geared up to participate in the Scholastic Surf Series (SSS) High School State Championship surf contest that lined up schools from every region in California from San Diego to Santa Cruz in a surfing competition at Oceanside Harbor that started Saturday and continued throughout the weekend. The Vikings had held the top ranking placing first place out of ten schools in Los Angeles/Santa Barbara region of the SSS for the 2012-2013 surf season prior to the event but fell to San Clemente and Santa Cruz in the Oceanside surf contest.
