UCLA recruit and Windward basketball star Jordin Canada is flying high these days. Canada, who led her team to the CIF Southern Section Open Division title against Mater Dei, is generally regarded as the top point guard in the country.

The top girls’ team in the land was one game away from the regional finals before Windward hit an Eagle road block. Etiwanda slipped past Windward 49-48, with good defense and an attacking offense that wouldn’t back down. USC-bound power forward Amy Okonkwo lead Eitwanda with 21 strong points.

Up next for the Windward girls basketball team is a run for the state title after demolishing Mater Dei for the CIF-Southern Section Open Division championship game on March 7. It's not too surprising that the Alpha League champs rolled the Monarchs in a 61-46 win.

Basketball is next on the major sport docket. And it will be here pretty soon. But it can’t come soon enough for the Windward girls basketball team and star point guard Jordin Canada.

Los Angeles-Windward defensive back Drew Bryant picked off two passes for interceptions against Kilpatrick. Bryant’s 62-yard interception return for a touchdown with five seconds remaining before halftime was the play that put the dagger in any chance that Kilpatrick might have had in defeating the home team.

Windward (32-0) defeated Mater Dei (30-2) 81-71 outscoring the Monarchs in the second quarter to win the game in the California Regional Championships at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario Saturday night. With the win, the Wildcats advance to the 2013 California State Finals game. Windward's point run began in the second quarter when the Wildcat's Emily Surloff hit a long jumper to give the Wildcats a six point lead at 30-24.

The Windward Invitational track and field meet brought together numerous athletes from the Los Angeles Area that included Brentwood, Archer, Crossroads, and Windward high schools offering athletes the chance to compete against each other at Santa Monica College Friday afternoon. 2012 Olympian Prince Mumba, who coaches Cross Country at Windward High School, said that he thought the meet was important for all the participants. "This is the first track meet for the high schools and it is really important for them," said Mumba. "It helps them prepare for their league meets next week."

The Westside saw five of its teams enter the playoffs and compete in a winner advances tournament bracket to determine how far teams will advance toward the championship round of the CIF Southern Section Boys Basketball. Santa Monica High School won in the championship game against El Toro at the Anaheim Arena to win the CIF Southern Section Boys Basketball crown. Westside teams that competed for the 2013 CIF Southern Section crowns include: Santa Monica High School (23-6), Crossroads (15-10), St. Monica Catholic (12-15), Brentwood (28-3) and Windward (18-8).

The Windward Wildcats Volleyball team are still alive in the state playoffs and have crossed into another phase of their 2012 season this time playing in the Southern California Regionals of the California State Volleyball Championships tournament beating Hoover 3-1 in Fresno Tuesday, Nov. 20.

Mountain Valley League Champions Rim of the World (26-1) defeated Windward (15-5) in three sets in the CIF Southern Section 3AA finals Saturday night. According to Windward Volleyball Head Coach Michelle McGuire, the Wildcats fought through bouts of ball control issues against a "scrappy Rim team" but came up short in the championship match.

Windward High School (15-4) defeated Santa Monica High School (12-3) upsetting a top-notch Vikings team in three sets 25-13, 25-22, and 25-13 Tuesday night at Windward High School.

Windward volleyball won its quarterfinalsmatch against Mayfair in three sets 25-15, 28-26, 25-19 wowing the home crowd with a second set comeback at the Jackson Center Saturday night. With the win, the Windward Wildcats advance to the CIF Southern Section semi-finals.

Shirley Windward, beloved co-founder of Windward School in Los Angeles that had origins Santa Monica in the early 1970's, passed away on Oct. 31. She was 93.

Westside girls volleyball teams Santa Monica High School (10-2), Pacifica Christian (13-1), St. Monica (9-4), New Roads (9-8), Archer (13-3), and Windward (12-4) have all qualified for the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Windward Volleyball (14-5) won over Brentwood (5-9) in three sets 25-11, 25-17, and 25-17 on Senior night at Brentwood High School Friday, Oct. 27. With the win, the Wildcats are guaranteed at least a share of the Alpha League Championship.

The Windward (13-5) Volleyball team blew past Crossroads (3-13) for the second time this season winning all three sets easily 25-8, 25-13, and 25-14 to advance their standing in the Alpha League.

Crossroads Tennis beat Windward 9-9 (82-73) in the final match of the season to avenge an earlier loss against the Wildcats and give some closure for the Roadrunners who hope to have a solid seed in the first round of the upcoming playoffs.

Three weeks into the season and the Crossroads Women's Tennis team (3-3) are showing signs of greatness with Roadrunners Shannon Gibbs beating Windward's number one Lizzy Isgar 6-1 in an exciting match that saw both players exhibit their powerful shots on the Reed Tennis Courts Thursday.
