Samohi Cross Country runner Justin Sardo recently won the Jim Staunton Champion for Character Award which recognizes student-athletes, coaches, administrators, schools, officials, and members of the media who best exemplify the virtues of sportsmanship and character among our member schools and our communities. Sardo, a junior at Samohi, said that being a runner has helped him to find balance in his life. "Running allows me to find myself, and that sort of permeates into my studies and into all aspects of my life," said Sardo.

The annual Jim Bush Meet at UCLA brought together Track and Field athletes from around the world pitting some of the worlds best athletes in a friendly yet intense competition at the University of California Los Angeles Saturday afternoon. Santa Monica College cross country coach and meet supervisor Eric Barron said that the Jim Bush meet is a good opportunity for athletes from around the world to come together and compete in the various Track and Field events. "I like the meet because it has everything from gold medal Olympians to serious recreational runners," said Barron.

The Santa Monica High School Track and Field team held their annual awards night at the Moose Lodge in Santa Monica Tuesday night in a ceremony that honored all of the Vikings who participated in the 2013 championship season. Santa Monica High School Track and Field head coach Tania Fisher said only positive words for the Vikings who completed the 2013 Track and Field season. "I am extremely proud of our boys and girls track team this season," said Fischer. "The girls varsity team are the dual meet Ocean League Champions."

SMC's Carzell VIckers, a 6'4" 190 pound athlete, competed in the California Track and Field Championships placing sixth in the triple jump event with a distance of 14.43 meters in San Mateo Saturday afternoon. Vickers holds a personal triple jump performance record of 14.73 meters gleaned at the Western State Conference Championships on April 19 and this jump ranks him fourth in the State of California.

The Samohi boys and girls track team qualified 13 athletes to go on to CIF after competing in the Ocean League finals at Beverly Hills High school Thursday, May 2 in a meet that determined which athletes would move on to CIF prelims. Samohi Track and Field head coach Tanya Fisher said that the Vikings competed against strong opponents and are now hoping to qualify for the CIF Finals. "The athletes had to come in first, second or third in the league, and qualify with a tough CIF standard," said Fischer.

The Santa Monica College track and field team is anticipating the Southern California Championships that will be held this weekend at Antelope Valley College after sixteen Corsairs qualified to participate in the track and field event. SMC track and field head coach Larry Silva said that many of the Corsairs have gotten better over the course of their junior college careers.

Santa Monica High School hosted a track and field meet at home against Hawthorne High School Thursday afternoon in a meet that saw many Vikings achieve personal best times in the track and field events. Samohi Track and Field Head Coach Tania Fisher said that winning is just part of the game for the Vikings. "After spring break the Samohi track team got back to business winning their dual meet against Hawthorne," said Fischer.

The Santa Monica High School track girls relay team broke the Samohi school record for the fastest time in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:56.09 at the Arcadia Track Invitational held on Saturday and Sunday. Santa Monica High School Track Coach Tania Fisher said that the girls that broke the record ran a very fast pace. "Our very fast ladies ran at the Arcadia Track Invitational this past weekend and broke the school 4x400 meter relay record," said Fisher.

The Windward Invitational track and field meet brought together numerous athletes from the Los Angeles Area that included Brentwood, Archer, Crossroads, and Windward high schools offering athletes the chance to compete against each other at Santa Monica College Friday afternoon. 2012 Olympian Prince Mumba, who coaches Cross Country at Windward High School, said that he thought the meet was important for all the participants. "This is the first track meet for the high schools and it is really important for them," said Mumba. "It helps them prepare for their league meets next week."

Prince Mumba, an 800m specialist born in the Copper belt of Kitwe, Zambia has been training with the Santa Monica Track Club at Santa Monica College since 2008. After four years of training with legendary Olympic coach Joe Douglas, he is set to run in the Olympics in London this week.
