St. Monica Lady Mariners Receive Multiple Awards For Stellar Basketball Season

St. Monica (28-7) girls basketball players have been awarded numerous honors for their play in the 2012-2013 basketball season with guard Briana Harris leading the team being named as CIF Division 4-A Player of the Year. Mariners girls basketball head coach John Skinner was named CIF Division 4-A Coach of the Year for his role in mentoring the girls through a season that saw the Mariners go 6-2 in the Camino Real League and go on to win the CIF Southern Section Crown.

Culver City Girls Softball Beats St. Monica 11-6

It was the top of the third inning and the St. Monica (4-7) softball team was down 5-3 against Culver City (3-7) when Mariners Veronica Navarro bested Centaurs pitcher Jessica Faber by slapping an inside the park home run to make the game 5-4 at Veterans Memorial Park in Culver City Wednesday afternoon. Mariners Aliza Chacon got on base with a line drive grounder soon after and cautiously made her way to third base before she was hit in by Mariners Alyssa Gutierrez to tie the game 5-5. But that was as close as the Mariners would get to winning the game against the Centaurs who won the game 11-6.

Saint John’s Health Center Foundation hosted an intimate fundraiser dinner featuring an exclusive performance by Johnny Mathis Feb. 23 that raised $100,000 for Saint John’s Gastrointestinal Department.

St. Monica Foul Trouble Causes Loss To St. Bernard 75-51

St. Monica (28-7) was defeated by St. Bernard (28-8) in the CIF California State Girls Basketball Playoffs 75-51 with the Vikings gaining control of the game from the opening tip-off until the last basket at home Tuesday night. St. Monica all-league forward Melissa Maragnes and all-conference guard Briana Harris got into foul trouble early in the game limiting their playing time in the first half and played a large factor in the Mariners loss to the Vikings.

Lady Mariners Wear Down Cardinals 52-43 To Advance In State Playoffs

As if three victories weren't enough, St. Monica defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart 52-43 for the fourth time this season with guard Briana Harris scoring 30 points for the Mariners in the CIF State Playoffs win in front of a sellout crowd at home Saturday night. St. Monica Basketball Head Coach John Skinner said that the Mariners won for the fourth time because they were able to outpace the Cardinals in the second half. “It is tough to beat a well coached team four times and we were fortunate enough to do that," said Skinner.

Third Time Is Charm For St. Monica Against St. Paul In CIF Championship Game

It was the third time St. Monica (29-6) had played St. Paul (19-13) in the 2012-2013 girls basketball season, but this time the Mariners overcame the Swordsmen 46-45 in the CIF Southern Section Finals at Mater Dei High School Saturday Night. St. Monica Girls Basketball Head Coach John Skinner said that he was impressed at how the coaching staff stuck together and stayed calm even after trailing by 17 points.

Westside Boys Basketball Teams Advance In CIF Playoffs

The Westside saw five of its teams enter the playoffs and compete in a winner advances tournament bracket to determine how far teams will advance toward the championship round of the CIF Southern Section Boys Basketball. Santa Monica High School won in the championship game against El Toro at the Anaheim Arena to win the CIF Southern Section Boys Basketball crown. Westside teams that competed for the 2013 CIF Southern Section crowns include: Santa Monica High School (23-6), Crossroads (15-10), St. Monica Catholic (12-15), Brentwood (28-3) and Windward (18-8).

St. Monica Girls Basketball Defeats Cantwell-Sacred Heart 67-55 In CIF Semi-Finals

St. Monica defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart 67-55 away in the CIF Semi-Finals Saturday night in front of a standing room only crowd breaking free of a late fourth quarter tie to solidify the victory and advance to the CIF championship game. St. Monica Girls Basketball Head Coach John Skinner thought that the game was played in a "tremendous atmosphere" and was proud of the way the Mariners played so well even without star guard Brianna Harris who played less then half the game.

St. Monica Falls To Lennox Academy In CIF Quarterfinals 2-0

St. Monica (15-6-2) fell to Lennox Academy (17-6-1) 2-0 in the CIF Quarterfinals eliminating the Mariners from the playoffs Friday afternoon at Airport Park. St. Monica Boys Soccer Head Coach Rimal Patel was proud of the Mariners for making it far into the CIF Southern Section playoffs. "We are in deep territory," said Patel. "This is the first time our school has ever been here.

University Prep's Nadia Lauren makes the winning goal against St. Monica High School in an overtime sudden death shootout at Airport Park Thursday afternoon.  The Jaguars tied against the Mariners 1-1 and the game ended 5-4 in a shootout after double overtime.

St. Monica Boys Soccer Advances To Quarterfinals With Overtime Win Over Buckley

St. Monica (15-5-3) boys soccer defeated Buckley (14-7-1) in the second round of the CIF Playoffs handing the Griffins their first loss of the season in an intense overtime shootout after the game ended in a tie 0-0 Wednesday afternoon at Airport Park. With the win, the Mariners advance to the CIF Southern Section Quarterfinals.

St. Monica Mariners Boys Basketball Fall To Brentwood Eagles 70-31

St. Monica(13-15) fell to Brentwood (25-3) by a score of 70-31 in a game where the Mariners seemed faced with a mismatch in every category and forward Leland King dominating the game with dunk after dunk to power the Eagles to victory. Mariners Basketball Head Coach Khi-Min Jung thought that the Mariners have had a tough season but did the best they could despite losing in the second round of the CIF Playoffs.

St. Monica (8-1-1) boys soccer beat Cantwell-Sacred Heart(7-9-1) by a score of 2-1 Monday afternoon at Airport Park before going on to tie top-seeded Serra Wednesday 2-2 showing just how good the Mariners are and how they have improved throughout the season.

Swordsmen Beat Lady Mariners In Basketball 53-49

The St. Paul Swordsmen dashed the hopes of the St. Monica Mariners (18-5) winning the clash of the El Camino Real League titans 53-49 for the second time this season where the Mariners looked to pull off their first win against the Swordsmen by tying the game at 44-44 with 2:58 left to play in the fourth quarter.

Lady Mariners Basketball Receive Top CIF Ranking After Beating Louisville

St. Monica (9-1) girls basketball won away against Louisville 59-47 Wednesday night and with the win they are the top ranked team in the first CIF Division 4-A poll. Mariners Head Coach John Skinner thought that St. Monica played well against the Royals. "We had a tough battle at Louisville last night but played a very good second half," said Skinner. "We were down eight at halftime. The pace of the game was key and we were able to really pull away in the 4th quarter."
