A federal jury has awarded a man arrested bySanta Monica Police Department (SMPD) $1.1 million in damages for excessive force used in his arrest. Justin L Palmer was arrested in April 21, 2015,by SMPD “for a municipal code violation and resist-ing arrest,” according to SMPD.

Body Worn Camera Pilot Program

The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) is implementing a Body Worn Camera (BWC) Pilot Program. Beginning September 12, 2016 select uniformed police officers and civilian personnel will be outfitted with these cameras.

Dui-Driver’s License Checkpoint

The Santa Monica Police Department will be conducting a Driving under the Influence (DUI)-Driver’s License Checkpoint. The operation is scheduled for Friday August 19, 2016 between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within city limits. The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints are a proven factor in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and/or drug related collisions.

Neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County joined forces Tuesday evening with thousands of communities nationwide for the 33rd Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. Santa Monica’s parks were filled with kids, magic, food, and drink, as members of local organizations got together with the Santa Monica Police Department for an evening of fun and comradery.

Bystanders were shocked this morning, August 2, at a crash on Ocean Park Boulevard and Centinela Avenue between a motorcyclist and a black Nissan Murano. The motorcyclist suffered some head trauma, with bleeding visible to bystanders.

The Santa Monica Police Department and the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) will offer a second Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training to help employees of clubs, bars, restaurants and liquor stores in Santa Monica sell and serve alcohol responsibly. The training will be held Tuesday, April 5 at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium from 12pm-4pm and registration is available at the door.
