The slaughter of six million Jews under Hitler’s extermination plan is well documented and that, in and of itself, is the terrifying face of the Holocaust. It is an historic fact that the Third Reich also rounded up gypsies, the mentally retarded or handicapped, and intellectuals. What is perhaps a lesser known is that gays, referred to as “bents” or “fluffs,” also fell victim to not fitting into Hitler’s manifesto of a pure Aryan race. Martin Sherman’s powerfully written play, “Bent,” shines a light on that more obscure piece of history, illuminating the treatment of homosexuals under the Nazi regime.

Two-time Grammy Award winner Paul Overstreet has chosen Santa Monica and the Ruskin Group Theatre as the location to premiere his new musical, “Sneaky Ole Time.” A BMI Songwriter of the Year (five years in a row), and Nashville Songwriters Association International Hall of Famer, Overstreet didn’t have much trouble catching Ruskin’s attention, but locking in a deal was a journey that took another few years.

Sisyphus, a character from Greek mythology, angered the gods by cheating death. When he was caught, he was condemned to push a stone up a hill, only for it to roll back down and have him restart the process all over again. Imagine seeing that situation on stage. Imagine the screams of agony. Now, imagine that all of it and the events leading up to it is silent. That is exactly what one would see when they go to see the production of “Sisyphus” opening this Tuesday at Theatre 40 (241 S Moreno Dr., Beverly Hills).
