1989 marked the beginning of the end of apartheid in South Africa, and at Santa Monica College, other revolutionary things were happening. The idea of a special program was born, which would provide smaller classes taught by phenomenal instructors with a focus on African-American culture where possible.

Santa Monica College student Courtney Kelley has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language (CLS) Scholarship to study abroad this summer in Suzhou, China. She is one of only 550 students selected from 200 colleges and universities across the nation for the CLS program – a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans mastering critical foreign languages.

Renowned muralist and Santa Monica College alum Andrew Hem returned to donate an artistic tribute to the place that helped him hone his craft. On adjoining walls of the SMC Science building – located on the east side of SMC’s main campus at 1900 Pico Boulevard – are two tall murals: one of a girl standing in an ocean with a hoodie pulled over her head, and around the corner, one of a boy in a snowy mountain setting.

The Santa Monica College Musical Theatre Workshop class will present not one, but two highly entertaining “Comedy Tonight!” shows June 5-7. Each show will be a Musical Theatre Revue showcasing some of the finest musicals from the late 19th century to the present.

Dakota Black’s life was plagued by tragic events. Genesis Garcia thought her dream of going to UC Berkeley was laughable. Caitlin Corker was a struggling student with a 1.9 GPA who wished she could go to UCLA. On June 16 – amid loud applause and vuvuzelas – Black, Corker and Garcia will be among thousands of students who will graduate from Santa Monica College.

Santa Monica College student Jonah Okike-Hephzibah sat stunned on a chair in the campus’s quad – unable to say anything but “Oh my God!” – as he was told that he had won the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation (JKCF) Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, the nation’s largest private scholarship for community college transfer students.

Santa Monica College is offering all California high school students free college classes this summer. SMC is waiving the enrollment fee (currently $46 per unit) for students now attending Grades 8 through 11, and for certain students in Grade 12.

The Santa Monica College Foundation has announced that 10 students in the Winter 2015 SMC Study Abroad Program were awarded $500 grants to help with the costs of their travel to study in South Africa – thanks to the generosity of Mark and Lani Verge. The Verges have established the Art Verge Study Abroad Scholarship Fund at SMC.
