SMC's Carzell VIckers sprints in the triple jump at the So-Cal Community College Finals to place sixth Saturday afternoon and qualify him for the California Track and Field State Championships.  Vickers had a triple jump performance of 14.73 meters at the Western State Conference Finals to rank him fourth in the state after training only three weeks for the event.

SMC's Carzell VIckers, a 6'4" 190 pound athlete, competed in the California Track and Field Championships placing sixth in the triple jump event with a distance of 14.43 meters in San Mateo Saturday afternoon. Vickers holds a personal triple jump performance record of 14.73 meters gleaned at the Western State Conference Championships on April 19 and this jump ranks him fourth in the State of California.

Santa Monica College's main campus at 1900 Pico Boulevard was locked down briefly Thursday morning while authorities investigated and arrested a student claiming to have a gun on campus, who is now believed to be behind making threats at other Los Angeles area schools.

SMC Basketball Sensation David Nwaba To Play For Cal Poly

Corsairs basketball sensation David Nwaba, a 6-4 forward, will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on a full athletic scholarship after signing a letter of intent to play on the Mustangs basketball program earlier this month. Santa Monica College basketball head coach Jerome Jenkins believes that the Big West is where Nwaba belongs and that his presence will be felt as soon as he steps onto the court. "I think he is an unbelievable athlete and that Cal Poly got a great steal," said Jenkins.

16 SMC Athletes Qualify For So Cal Championships

The Santa Monica College track and field team is anticipating the Southern California Championships that will be held this weekend at Antelope Valley College after sixteen Corsairs qualified to participate in the track and field event. SMC track and field head coach Larry Silva said that many of the Corsairs have gotten better over the course of their junior college careers.

SMC tennis stars Juliana Nelkin and Kaori Tsuda led the Corsairs by reaching the finals in the 2013 CCCAA individual playoffs to determine the California Community College State Champions beating Orange Coast College's Michelle Cyrus and Mia Hashimoto 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals at The Ojai in Ojai, Calif. But Nelkin and Tsuda lost to Sarah Anderson and Victoria Vo of Fullerton College in the doubles event finals.

The main quad at Santa Monica College at 1900 Pico Boulevard was briefly evacuated Tuesday lunch time after a note was found in a bathroom that alluded to a potential bomb threat.

SMC's Tsuda and Nelkin Defeat Magalhes and Bravo In 2013 WSC Doubles Championships

SMC doubles tennis team Kaori Tsuda and Juliana Nelkin defeated Santa Barbara's Bruna Magalhes and Nadya Bravo 6-2, 6-3 at the 2013 Western State Conference Championships in Ojai to earn the title of 2013 WSC Doubles Champions for the first time in SMC history Saturday afternoon. SMC tennis head coach Richard Goldenson said that Tsuda and Nelkin have been working hard to beat a doubles team that defeated them earlier in the season. "Team Tsuda/Nelkin had been beaten by team Magalhaes/Bravo earlier in the season," said Goldenson. "Since that match, Kaori and Julie have been working hard on their return game and net rushing. Yesterday, Julie and Kaori shifted into overdrive and took it to the next level."

The Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles on Saturday awarded Santa Monica College student newspaper Corsair photographer Amy Gaskin as student photographer of the year.

Santa Monica College tennis players Kaori Tsuda and Juliana Nelkin have qualified to play in the finals of the Western State Conference (WSC) Women's Tennis Championships scheduled to be played at 3:00 p.m. at Ventura College Friday, April 12. Tsuda beat Jackie Griffin in Round 16 6-2 and 6-0 while Nelkin beat Katy Scheck 6-0 and 6-0 in Round 16 of the 2013 WSC Championships Women's Singles.
