Trio Of Samohi Students Selected To Join Elite National Honors Ensembles

Three Santa Monica High School music students hit a high note when after years of dedicated practice and passion, they were selected from among thousands of students nationwide to perform with the 2015 National Association for Music Education (NAFME) All-National Honor Ensembles.

Hard work and determination paid off for John Adams Middle School students participating on the mock trial team finishing in the top 12 of 52 teams, in a recent County-wide competition sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF).

Four temporary crossing guards are now stationed at the Samohi Michigan Avenue and 7th Street crossing during peak drop off and pick up times, as of Monday, Nov. 16, while a more permanent solution to traffic concerns can be determined. It is to address parent and staff safety concerns following the recent conversion to one way streets.

Temporary Crossing Guards Assigned To Santa Monica High School Starting Monday

The City of Santa Monica has arranged for four temporary crossing guards to be stationed a the Samohi Michigan Avenue and 7th Street crossing during peak drop off and pick up times, beginning on Monday while a more permanent solution to traffic concerns can be determined.

Santa Monica High School is a regional Title 1 school serving a diverse population of 3,100 students form a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, and households.

Help Santa Monica Win LA2050 Funds To Address Teen Mental Health

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and City of Santa Monica are asking for the community to support efforts to tackle the teen mental health issues by casting their vote for The Thrive Center at Samohi in this year’s LA2050 contest.

Robert Villa, Jr. served honorably in the U.S. Army before his postal career and was married for 25 years before losing his wife to cancer in 2008. He has four daughters (three pictured) and eight grandchildren.

PCB Inspection & Sampling Reports For Samohi, Olympic High Released

Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) is planning improvements to both Santa Monica High School (Samohi) and Olympic High School and has released the Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) inspection and sampling reports for materials that will be removed during the planned demolition and modernization on both campuses.

Two New House Principals Start Work At Santa Monica High School

The SMMUSD Board of Education approved the appointments of two new Santa Monica High School house principals at its July 15 regular meeting. Julie Markussen and Steve Sharmokh began in their new roles effective July 16.

Santa Monica High Academic Decathlon Team Finishes In Top Third At Quiz Bowl

Santa Monica High School's Academic Decathlon Team finished at the top third out of 272 high schools nationwide at the High School National Academic Quiz Bowl in Chicago on May 31 after reaching the national tournament playoffs that Sunday.

Teen Dream: Santa Monica YA Book Festival Debuts April 11

Santa Monica’s own literary version of Coachella, YALLWest, will make its debut as the city’s first Young Adult book festival on April 11 and 12.

Cody Williams’ body tells his story better than anyone can. There’s the jagged spinal cord injury ribbon on his right bicep. Above that is a protruding Samoan warrior in a football helmet, wielding an axe. There’s the signature of his mother’s name, Stacy, and words like “Strength,” “No Days Off” and “What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Stronger.”

Team Marine members Zoe Parcells, Martin Liu, and Kimberly Fuentes were awarded first place out of 16 teams in the Environmental Management category at the Los Angeles County Science Fair on Saturday and will now advance to the state fair.

Santa Monica High Students Win First Place At LA County Science Fair

Bending down to pick up a final cigarette butt on the side of the road, three Santa Monica High School students end an afternoon’s worth of cigarette counting and collection. Samohi Team Marine members Martin Liu, Kimberly Fuentes, and Zoe Parcells went through this ritual for one day a week for 16 weeks last year.
