Some local basketball players were named to the All-CIF Southern Section 2013-14 teams. From the Westside, it was Shanon Volpis from Pacifica Christian. When you have a player like Windward’s Jordin Canada on your side of town, it is easy to get overlooked.

An online petition to reinstate a Santa Monica High School teacher involved in a physical altercation with a student has collected more than 3,500 signatures while a Facebook group "We Support Coach Black of Samohi" has passed 10,000 members.

The Santa Monica-Malibu School District (SMMUSD) Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday night to incorporate boys and girls lacrosse into the curriculum at Santa Monica High School.

Jennifer Gsell and Quinn D’Andrea have been named winners of the National YoungArts Foundation’s 2014 YoungArts competition in the discipline of popular voice. They are both seniors that attend Santa Monica High School and met in the high school’s choir department directed by Mr. Jeffe Hulls.

Hopes for Santa Monica High to repeat as CIF boys basketball champs were abruptly dashed by a visiting Rancho Cucamonga team on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Rancho Cucamonga took the lead in all four quarters to roll to a 74-56 CIF-SS Division 1AA win against Samohi.

The playoff scene continues for local basketball teams as Samohi, Crossroads and Pacifica Christian all get in gear for another round of postseason play. Samohi (17-10), which easily defeated Montebello on Friday, will take on Rancho Cucamonga at home tonight at 7.p.m. Crossroads (19-5), which barely escaped with a 60-52 win against Providence, will go up against Windward (20-8) on their home court tonight at 7 p.m. as well.

Samohi senior Matt Tapia made a bit of school history when he tossed in a “buzzer beater” basket in the final second’s of the Vikings' 76-45 first round playoff win against Montebello. In the last five minutes of the game, a roar came up from the stands as the student body loudly chanted: “ We Want Matt, We Want Matt.”

The second Ocean League showdown of the season between the Santa Monica High School boys basketball team and Beverly Hills High School could not have started worse for the Vikings Friday night. With sole possession of first place on the line, Samohi didn't just get out of the gate slow, it found itself stuck in the mud in the first quarter.

The road back to glory is usually a hard one to navigate. The Santa Monica boys’ basketball team is learning that lesson. A year removed from being crowned as kings of CIF Southern Section Division 1, Samohi has found out that it is much more difficult to be the hunted as oppose to being the ones doing the hunting.
