Four decades after Apollo 17 astronauts shot the “Blue Marble,” the first complete true-color image of the entire Earth, NASA released the updated version earlier this month of the fully sunlit Earth from one million miles away.

Santa Monica Rotarians got the chance to re-live the historic 1911 Santa Monica Road Races at last Friday’s meeting.

Last week’s Rotary meeting was a crash course lesson in Santa Monica’s genesis. The main theme was the city’s roots as an auto racing destination, and the syllabus included buzzworthy L.A. trivia, as well as which streets used to be the auto track.

The guest speaker at last Friday’s April 17 Santa Monica Rotary Club meeting enlightened the Rotarians on a hot topic: the state water crisis. Although the issue is consistently in the news, speaker Matthew Fienup, who holds a master’s degree in economics from UCSB and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in a relevant field, offered a unique mindset from the viewpoint of an economist.

There are few people in this world as well traveled, well informed, and as brave as Steve McAndrew. As the head of emergency operations for the International Federation of the Red Cross, he works globally on all sorts of projects. When he’s not out in the field, which he is 50 to 75 percent of his year, he’s mentoring, training, and working on policy development. Lately he’s been in Sierra Leone, in the middle of the biggest Ebola outbreak the world has yet to see.

Santa Monica Rotarians, WISE & Healthy Aging Hand Out Valentine’s Day Goodies

Santa Monica Rotarians Learn Of Philanthropic Uganda Trips

At the Jan. 23 Santa Monica Rotary Club meeting, the foundation’s motto – “Service Above Self” – was highlighted more so than usual throughout the afternoon. With an invocation by Rotarian Adam Lichtl, who touched on serving as “miracles in others’ lives,” the meeting started on an inspirational note as the members collectively sang a few songs and welcomed guests to their Rotary club.
