Last Friday, April 10, marked a special themed “Hobby Day” during the Santa Monica Rotary Club’s weekly meeting. After a prayerful invocation by Matt Williams, the club members collectively crooned “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” in honor of the recent MLB kickoff.

The Rotary Club of Santa Monica had the opportunity to become more acquainted with their fellow club members through the familiar Craft Talks program on Friday, March 31, during which Rotarians share with the rest of the club more details about their personal and professional lives.

Santa Monica Rotarians at the March 20 meeting were enlightened by a knowledgeable investor about the world of entrepreneurship. Before the guest speaker shared his perspectives, Rotarian Russ Warner led the club in an invocation and song leaders Matt Williams and Ken Waltzer jubilantly led the Rotarians into the classic “Under the Boardwalk” with a lyrical spin.

The Rotary Club of Santa Monica is currently accepting applications for its Community and Youth Grants program from non-profit organizations that serve the Santa Monica area and address the needs of those less fortunate in our community.

There are few people in this world as well traveled, well informed, and as brave as Steve McAndrew. As the head of emergency operations for the International Federation of the Red Cross, he works globally on all sorts of projects. When he’s not out in the field, which he is 50 to 75 percent of his year, he’s mentoring, training, and working on policy development. Lately he’s been in Sierra Leone, in the middle of the biggest Ebola outbreak the world has yet to see.

This past Valentine’s Day, a group of about 30 volunteers – comprised of Santa Monica Rotarians and WISE & Healthy Aging affiliates – embodied the spirit of the love-centered holiday by delivering treats to the homes of local senior citizens.

At the Jan. 23 Santa Monica Rotary Club meeting, the foundation’s motto – “Service Above Self” – was highlighted more so than usual throughout the afternoon. With an invocation by Rotarian Adam Lichtl, who touched on serving as “miracles in others’ lives,” the meeting started on an inspirational note as the members collectively sang a few songs and welcomed guests to their Rotary club.

At the Dec. 12 Santa Monica Rotary Club meeting, the essence of the holiday season was certainly felt from the beginning: the members sang a Hanukkah tune in unison, the spirit of giving materialized in the form of two grants, and the club learned more about a seemingly unfamiliar part of the world.

The Santa Monica Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the annual Wine and Jazz Festival, was held Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Museum of Flying. The funds raised from the event help largely finance the Rotary Club’s philanthropic and charitable projects, such as local and international service missions and trips.
