Red Cross Announces 2006 Spririt:

The American Red Cross of Santa Monica has announced its 2006 Spirit Award recipients. The Awards recognize extraordinary commitments to service on behalf of the American Red Cross.

Kitty Dukakis is being honored for her humanitarian efforts on behalf of “worldwide youth interaction and empowerment” as well as her tsunami relief work.

A posthumous Spirit Award will be made to Santa Monica Police Department officer and United States Marine Corps Reserves officer, Major Ricardo “Rick” Crocker, who was killed in the Al-Anbar province in Iraq on May 26, 2005. He was a longtime volunteer for the Santa Monica Red Cross chapter.

Spirit Awards will also be given to Lions Gate Entertainment and Activision, Inc., two local companies that contributed generously to the Hurricane Katrina and Rita relied funds, as well as encouraging their employees to serve as volunteers.

Members of the Spirit Awards Honorary Committee are Eric Braeden, Santa Monica Police Chief James T. Butts, Jr., Marty Evans, Santa Monica Fire Chief Jim Hone, Al Jarreau, Linda and Kurt Rambis, Bob Saget, Nancy Sinatra, Nancy Steitz, and Dave Sykes.

The awards will be presented at a celebration at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica on February 11.

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, followed by dinner and the awards ceremony.

Presiding at the gala event will be mistress and master of ceremonies Ally Mills and Orson Bean.

There will be dancing to the Tom Nolan Band. A comedian will perform and some of the 100 local Red Cross volunteers who worked in the Gulf Coast disaster area will be recognized.

In addition, excerpts from a documentary on the volunteers who took part in the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita disaster relief campaign will be screened.

The gala will also mark the 125th anniversary of the founding of the American Red Cross and the launch of the Santa Monica chapter’s Community Disaster Response Fund.
