Santa Monica’s two newest parks -- Tongva Park and Ken Genser Square -- have been named “Frontline Parks” by the national urban park advocacy organization City Parks Alliance.

The City of Santa Monica will accept permit applications Dec. 2 through Dec. 16 for anyone seeking to conduct fitness or athletic instruction, classes, or camps for compensation -- financial or in exchange for goods or services -- in Santa Monica's public parks or at the beach.

Parks in Santa Monica have made headlines recently. City Hall and Sacramento have been tussling over redevelopment funding for Tongva Park, while private fitness trainers at Palisades Park are soon to be subjected to new fees and regulations starting Jan. 1. As debates ensue over two open spaces surrounding the downtown core, a new park may quietly be arriving near Bergamot Station: Buffer Park.

Second readings are rarely fodder for excitement. However, the City Council provided some pre-Halloween fireworks in taking two stabs Tuesday evening to approve in second reading an ordinance regulating commercial fitness training activity at Palisades Park and other open spaces across Santa Monica.

Santa Monica resident David Garden has walked past the front of City Hall every other day for the past year with a watchful eye on the construction of Ken Genser Square. A couple of months ago, he noticed there were some serious leakage problems with the new multi-tiered fountain project in front of City Hall.

Residents of the Borderline Neighborhood in Santa Monica were greeted by a new form of street art on Saturday morning. Woven in to the fence of quaint and cozy Ozone Park was the statement, "You Are Beautiful."

“Palisades Garden Walk” will be an answer to a trivia question: what was the park wedged in between City Hall and Santa Monica Beach named during its development and construction? Indeed, Palisades Garden Walk is now a footnote in the history books as the newest public open space and recreation area in Santa Monica will be named Tongva Park.
