With a total 38 operational guest rooms, and a sizeable staff, Santa Monica’s Palihouse is having its impact felt on surrounding streets. Street parking is backed up for blocks surrounding the boutique hotel, as guests and staff fill available spots, often double-parking until a space frees up.

The remaining two residents living at Palihouse Santa Monica, formerly Embassy Hotel Apartments, are set to be evicted in May. The legality of such a process is under the spotlight after stark revelations reveal that the sudden classification of the building from multi-family residential to hotel, is dubious.

Light rail stations and hotels are not an uncommon partnership. In neighboring Los Angeles, a few of Metro’s rail lines have stops adjacent to hotels such as The W in Hollywood and The Standard in downtown Los Angeles. In Santa Monica, two hotels will soon be located across from the Expo Line terminus as council members unanimously approved Tuesday the development of a Courtyard by Marriott and Hampton Inn by Hilton.

Hotels in Santa Monica are no strangers to news, what with the Fairmont Miramar planning expansion and the Loews Hotel currently serving as home to the American Film Market (AFM). Even hotels yet to be built, such as the proposed Hampton Inn and Suites (Hilton) and Courtyard by Marriott, have been featured on the pages of the local press.

The Mirror would like to clarify details on the article published Oct. 18 “Poll Shows Residents Don’t Favor Dense, Tall Buildings” that contained a survey question relating to the Fairmont Miramar’s redevelopment project. The Mirror was unable to confirm who paid for the poll before time of press, but can now report that The Huntley Hotel contracted with Lake Research Partners to conduct a telephone poll of 404 Santa Monica voters between September 10 and 15.

The Bungalow lounge at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica temporarily closed Monday while its liquor license is updated. The hotel is taking the opportunity to conduct renovations during the short-term closure.

If “Mean Girls 3” were ever produced, the bickering back and forth between Santa Monica’s two largest hotels would be the ideal cast members. Less than one week after the Huntley Hotel’s lawyers issued a demand letter to the Fairmont Miramar, the legal team behind Ocean Avenue LLC (the group who owns the Miramar) responded with a five-page response.

If the Hatsfields and McCoys lived in Santa Monica in 2013, one family would be residing in the Fairmont Miramar while the other might take up residence in the Huntley Hotel. Since it announced plans to renovate and expand its resort campus, the Fairmont has been engaged in feud-like relations with its neighbor, The Huntley.
