It was a Monday. I woke up and looked in the mirror. Aaaaaahhhhh! I was turning into my Granny Annie – in the belly at least. I turned 50, and wham! Didn’t even see it coming. I rushed to squeeze on the Spanx. Oh-oh, even those were not helping much!

Are we too old for body piercing? I say no! And it’s not like a tattoo; if you don’t want to wear the piece of jewelry, or bone or ring or whatever you put in the area of you body that’s been pierced, you can just take it off when you don’t want it. Or put it back in if you do.

I have a good number of friends who are over 40 and single. All are adorable, in reasonably good to great shape, successful, interesting, funny and have great personalities. But they still have trouble finding “The One.”

I have to thank my former trainer, Adriane, for giving me the confidence to begin running for the first time at 50 years old. We started by running in a little circle in Palisades Park, then the circles got bigger, and then they turned into one mile and before I knew it, I was running three to five mile sessions with him. It was so fun!

It’s Valentine’s Day. To me, it’s kind of like New Year’s Eve. Every person in the city who never goes out any other time goes out to dinner.

Tuesday – one hour of weight training. Thursday – three hours of Naam Yoga. Friday – one hour of weight training. Walk Zoey every day for at least a half-hour. I am finally incorporating exercise permanently into my life. One New Year’s resolution down – many others to go.

I was surfing the internet and ran across an article that totally got to me. It was about things you’ll regret when you’re old. I scanned the list. The more I read, the more inspired I was to NOT regret them.

Several months ago, I was at my weight trainer’s studio, finished with my workout, and ran into his next client. We exchanged a quick smile and a hello, and went about our day.

I’m married. Usually happily. But if I wasn’t, where does a woman over 50 who looks more like 40, that is attractive, successful, financially stable, a great cook, well-traveled, funny, semi-athletic, spiritual, an animal-lover, generous, and well-connected find their soul mate? (What, a little too specific?)

So I am sitting in my hotel room in Las Vegas. In the Wellness Wing of the MGM Grand. I did not specifically ask to stay in this wing. Didn’t even know they had it. The universe comes through for me – again!

They say that New Year is a time for reflection on the things you’ve accomplished or did not this year and for setting new goals and expectations for the next year.

What a year 2013 was for Hot Flash Universe! My column was conceived on my birthday – May 28, as a source of information for women of all ages, particularly over 40, to keep us sexy, youthful, and smart, with a healthy dose of humor.

The other day at a Santa Monica gathering, I was talking with friends about my column, and they suggested I write a story about tattoos. Tattoos? I don’t know too many women our age that have tattoos.

I had three black-tie galas to attend in the last month. Two major hospital galas, and one County Government black tie affair.

While some might swear by sudoku or word puzzles, there’s evidence that something much more near and dear to our hearts could help prevent cognitive decline: photography. In a study published in Psychological Science, a group of senior citizens who took a three-month photography course saw a significant increase across a number of mental tasks.

My good friend Sarah and I went to lunch and shopping in Beverly Hills this past weekend. After a glass of champagne and a chicken Caesar salad at Barney’s, we made our way down to the lower level of the store to check out the massive, new cosmetics and fragrance department.

My friend Grace Cheng Braun sent me some information earlier this week about how her organization WISE & Healthy Aging is offering free memory screenings. It’s in conjunction with National Memory Screening Day on Nov. 19.

Last week I managed an interesting edu-tainment event for a client of mine, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Held at sexy downtown restaurant LeKa (owners of Wokcano restaurants), we combined a gourmet food and wine pairing with a pair of breast cancer surgeons. The docs were there to hold “dinner table” conversation with some of the most influential women who work and/or live in the downtown area.

My friend Nancy and I had a closet-cleaning event recently. MY closet. It was a riot. We drank champagne, and laughed our asses off while doing it. My closet is so full, I do not have room for one more thing, but I end up wearing the same seven to eight items. So what else was in there? Stuff from 1988 through 2013. Of course, there was a story with each era.

Apparently sex sells. My recent Hot Flash column titled “The Power of the Blowjob” was featured on the Jay Leno Show last Monday. There we were, my associate Dienna D’Olimpio and I on international TV. What fun.

I have a love/hate relationship with Las Vegas. Top things I hate: Gambling. Drinking. Staying out late. Walking at least half a mile to the guest elevators, and at least a mile to anywhere else. Floozy-looking women trying to walk in high, high heels. The overweight tourist with his pants hanging down so low you can see his butt crack. Smoke-filled rooms.

I woke up with a bad cold today. Maybe it was because in the last two weeks, I got an average of six hours of sleep a night, partied every night the first week with friends in Chicago, and when I got back, worked an average of 15 hours a day to catch up, ate like crap, and to top it off, managed a grand opening event for a client in their emergency room – disease central!

So, I am tired of spending thousands of dollars a year looking “younger than 50.” Over the past year, I purchased four different eye creams (one was $400) and they all have worked really well, or at least I thought so. Over the past year, I acquired several different facial moisturizers – one for day, one for night, one for summer, one for winter, one for when my face is drier than usual, one for when my face is more oily. Damn that Barney’s cosmetics counter! They sure know how to sell their product.

My beloved kitty, Humphrey, died a couple of weeks ago. I cried all night long and all day long. My eyes were puffy and red and I was exhausted. I worked that whole day. Most sane people would have gone right to bed after work, but my friends talked me into going to a yoga class.

Who doesn’t want to look seven years younger with or without surgery? I am not against a little nip and tuck here and there, but the majority of face-lifts in Los Angeles scare the crap out of me.
