Big Blue Bus is reminding the community that its services will be operating regular hours on all our bus routes this Monday (Presidents Day), except for Routes 4 and 6.

Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus transit authority is encouraging bus users to allow extra time on bus trips on Valentine's Day this Thursday, citing the romantic day is also a heavy one for traffic on local roads.

It comes as little surprise Silicon Beach -- or Venice Beach, as it is more commonly known -- will be hosting a high-tech ball drop of its own this New Year’s Eve. Unlike Times Square, however, Venice will be dropping a giant 3-D beach ball at 11:59 p.m. PST at the historic mural of Venice Founder Abbot Kinney on N. Venice Blvd. paying homage to the beach ball that was invented by Jonathon DeLonge in Venice, CA in 1938.

Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus reminds passengers it will operate on a Sunday schedule on New Year's Day this Tuesday. Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, and Rapid 10 will operate on a Sunday schedule. All other routes will NOT be in service.

With the unattended Nativity scenes now on display through the first week of January on private property on the 2700 block of Ocean Park Boulevard, a number of attended displays are being held nightly from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Dec. 23 near the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier.

Downtown Santa Monica, Inc officially initiated its annual holiday season, Winterlit, on a rainy Saturday night with acrobats, musicians, and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Just like every holiday season, residents and tourists alike surrounded the center stage to watch the lighting of the 54-foot tree on Nov. 17.

The Big Blue Bus has issued the following Veterans Day holiday service updates. Due to the holiday, Route 6 will not be in service. The UCLA Hilgard Terminal will be closed; Route 1, 2, 3, 8, and 12 riders, use Ackerman Terminal instead. All other Big Blue Bus routes will operate regular weekday schedules.

With Thanksgiving only weeks away and the holiday season not too far after that, Downtown Santa Monica’s popular ICE at Santa Monica skating rink opens for its sixth year starting today. The rink is part of the Winterlit 2012 celebration of the holiday season that includes community holiday events and many surprises.
