The 2015 Special Olympics are gone, but the volunteer work of the largest sporting event in Los Angeles since 1984 lives on in the streets of the city. One of Santa Monica’s own local fitness experts is happy to report he had a hand in changing the lives of some choice athletes.

The 2XU Santa Monica RunFEST invited runners of all levels to participate in friendly competition and family fun at the Santa Monica Pier on Oct. 19. With different distances for every skill level and age group, the event inspired all runners to participate, but it also was a chance to give back to Santa Monica and Malibu schools’ sports programs and student athletes.

I have to thank my former trainer, Adriane, for giving me the confidence to begin running for the first time at 50 years old. We started by running in a little circle in Palisades Park, then the circles got bigger, and then they turned into one mile and before I knew it, I was running three to five mile sessions with him. It was so fun!

Tuesday – one hour of weight training. Thursday – three hours of Naam Yoga. Friday – one hour of weight training. Walk Zoey every day for at least a half-hour. I am finally incorporating exercise permanently into my life. One New Year’s resolution down – many others to go.
