The Crossroads School boys team finished 15th at the CIF cross country state championships, which took place in Fresno. Freshman sensation Ethan Finkel delivered as he has done all season, coming in third in his division.

Earlier this year, Crossroads School second-grader Lucinda Empson-Speiden, the daughter of Rachel Klauber-Speiden and Josh Empson, submitted a poem to a contest that was held for student writers through the United States and Canada.

Prior to Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 4-A semifinals playoff matchup against Laguna Blanca, Crossroads had been on a roll. The Crossroads volleyball team turned more than their share of heads with their play on the court. To get to the semis, Crossroads defeated Long Beach St. Anthony in three sets in the quarterfinal round.

The Crossroads athletics department is doing some big things. At least in fall sports they are. While football is all the rage and getting the bulk of the attention at the moment in high school sports, other athletic programs are going on strong as well.

The Crossroads girls volleyball battled hard against Paraclete on Halloween night, but came up short in the victory department. Paraclete defeated Crossroads in four sets, winning 25-19, 25-17 and 27-25.

It was a good day at Mt. SAC for the Roadrunners cross country team. Crossroads freshman boys, division 4 and 5 combined-Harper Peck Voll placed 18th overall in 18:56, a very fine time for a freshman. The Roadrunners freshmen team placed 10th overall and 5th among Division 5 schools.

The Crossroads cross country teams are having outstanding seasons. The girls went into the year seeded fourth and it appears this was valid. The boys have some freshmen that should be watched throughout their high school careers.

The Crossroads girls’ volleyball is doing extremely well this year. The Roadrunners are making a lot of noise this season as one of the top teams in their division in the CIF Southern Section.

The Crossroads boys varsity cross country team was without one of its top runners, Ethan Finkel, which made for a very exciting and close meet with Viewpoint and Brentwood last week.

Fourteen-year-old Jiye Angela Bae, a freshman at Santa Monica’s Crossroads School for the Arts & Science, was chosen as one of Southern California’s most talented teens in the finale performance at The Music Center’s 25th Annual Spotlight Awards this past weekend.

Quite a unique event took place inside council chambers at Santa Monica City Hall on May Day: the governing body considered a development agreement (DA) that was not a multi-use development featuring apartment units and ground floor shops.

The Windward Invitational track and field meet brought together numerous athletes from the Los Angeles Area that included Brentwood, Archer, Crossroads, and Windward high schools offering athletes the chance to compete against each other at Santa Monica College Friday afternoon. 2012 Olympian Prince Mumba, who coaches Cross Country at Windward High School, said that he thought the meet was important for all the participants. "This is the first track meet for the high schools and it is really important for them," said Mumba. "It helps them prepare for their league meets next week."

Crossroads (4-0) boys volleyball won their first league game against Brentwood (1-2) soaring over the Eagles 3-1 at Brentwood High School Friday night. The Roadrunners lost the first set 27-25 before climbing back on top to win the next three sets 25-19, 25-23, and 25-15. Crossroads Boys Volleyball Head Coach Mary Jo Deutschman said the Roadrunners played well against the Eagles. "It's our first league game and I think we played well," said Deutschman. "We lost the first game but then we just buckled down and came back tough and gritted it out."

Santa Monica Little League hosted its first Rosti Home Run Derby event followed by the first games of the baseball season on Majors Field at Memorial Park Saturday morning. After an hour of home run slams by the Santa Monica Little League's top batters, Orioles Cody Rains was declared winner of the Home Run Derby. "I'm speechless," said Rains. "I've always been known as a good hitter and now I just proved it."

The Westside saw five of its teams enter the playoffs and compete in a winner advances tournament bracket to determine how far teams will advance toward the championship round of the CIF Southern Section Boys Basketball. Santa Monica High School won in the championship game against El Toro at the Anaheim Arena to win the CIF Southern Section Boys Basketball crown. Westside teams that competed for the 2013 CIF Southern Section crowns include: Santa Monica High School (23-6), Crossroads (15-10), St. Monica Catholic (12-15), Brentwood (28-3) and Windward (18-8).

With 15:04 left on the clock, Crossroads (16-3-3) forward Eli Berg-Rosenblatt scored the first of his two goals to tie the game 1-1 against Silverado (17-4-3) in the CIF Southern Section Quarterfinals cracking through a seemingly impenetrable defense at home Friday night. The goal looked to change the tide and fortunes of the Roadrunners boys soccer team in a winner advances loser goes home soccer playoff game, and for the moment it did.

Crossroads (16-4-1) defeated Vistamar (8-4-4) in the second round of the CIF Playoffs 4-1 scoring two goals in the first half and two goals in the second to power over the Vikings at home Tuesday evening. With the win, the Roadrunners advance to the CIF Southern Section Quarterfinals.

The basketball and soccer teams in Santa Monica are looking to win their final league games of the season in order to secure a playoff spot and advance in CIF with this next week deciding the fate of many of the Westside teams.

Crossroads(8-7) lost to Milken(12-3) 61-47 in what would prove to be a hard fought battle for both teams with the Roadrunners losing despite having an eight-point lead after the first quarter at home Tuesday night.

From the moment both teams entered the auditorium it was clear that Brentwood(15-1) had a size advantage over Crossroads(8-6); an advantage they would use to the fullest by winning the contest 75-40 at the Crossroads Extravaganza event at home Friday night.

Crossroads (10-3) Lady Roadrunners Basketball won in the final minute over Brentwood (9-10) 51-50 during the Crossroads Extravaganza night that boasted the sports play of all the Winter Sports featured at Crossroads versus rival Brentwood in front of thousands of fans who flocked to support the two crosstown rival sports programs.
