The community is invited to join the Civic Working Group (CWG) this Saturday, June 13 to comment and provide feedback on the preliminary recommendations that the CWG members have developed over the course of an 18 month community visioning process. It will be held from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.

The final item voted on at last Tuesday’s city council meeting was for a resolution establishing interim uses and fees for the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. While City staff had intended to bring this agenda item to council members in early 2014, the issue was introduced in the final meeting of 2013 to possibly accommodate an event hosted by BMW.

Not necessarily a case of calling in the cavalry, the Santa Monica City Council made a few appointments Oct. 22 to a new group ordained with finding a way to bring the Civic Auditorium back to life after it went dark four months ago.

Next week begins council members preparing to grapple with the Biennial Budget. By the time the week comes to an end, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium will close up shop and remain dark for the immediate future.

The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium will go dark June 30. What was once a premiere venue where the world’s most famous musicians performed and The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences held its prestigious Oscar awards ceremony has now become relegated to hosting the occasional meeting for a handful of people inside a room with a capacity of about 200 people.

We sat on uncomfortable seats in Santa Monica’s beloved Civic Auditorium on Saturday. A full house was there for the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra’s “A Farewell Tribute to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.”

The Santa Monica Symphony will perform an exciting free program consisting of some of Tchaikovsky’s greatest works this Saturday, May 25, at 7:30 pm. It will be the Symphony's final performance at the Civic Auditorium, which is closing its doors indefinitely as of June.
