SMC Basketball Sensation David Nwaba To Play For Cal Poly

Corsairs basketball sensation David Nwaba, a 6-4 forward, will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on a full athletic scholarship after signing a letter of intent to play on the Mustangs basketball program earlier this month. Santa Monica College basketball head coach Jerome Jenkins believes that the Big West is where Nwaba belongs and that his presence will be felt as soon as he steps onto the court. "I think he is an unbelievable athlete and that Cal Poly got a great steal," said Jenkins.

The San Antonio Spurs practiced Saturday morning at Santa Monica College in the lead-up to game four in their Western Conference playoff series with the Los Angeles Lakers.

St. Monica Lady Mariners Receive Multiple Awards For Stellar Basketball Season

St. Monica (28-7) girls basketball players have been awarded numerous honors for their play in the 2012-2013 basketball season with guard Briana Harris leading the team being named as CIF Division 4-A Player of the Year. Mariners girls basketball head coach John Skinner was named CIF Division 4-A Coach of the Year for his role in mentoring the girls through a season that saw the Mariners go 6-2 in the Camino Real League and go on to win the CIF Southern Section Crown.

Pleasant Grove defeated Santa Monica 73-57 in the Division I CIF state basketball championships Friday night in Sacramento. The victory at Sleep Train Arena was Pleasant Grove’s first state championship.

Santa Monica High Vikings Travel To Sacramento For Boys Div. I Championship

The Santa Monica High School boys basketball team will take on Pleasant Grove High School (Elk Grove, CA) in Sacramento tonight in the California State Championship game after a nail-biting win against Loyola last Saturday night.

Windward's Kristen Simon looks to score a basket against Mater Dei in the 2013 CIF So. California Regional Championships at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario Saturday night.  Simon scored 14 points and had 17 rebounds to give her a double-double in the game.

Windward Defeats Mater Dei 81-71 In Regional State Championships

Windward (32-0) defeated Mater Dei (30-2) 81-71 outscoring the Monarchs in the second quarter to win the game in the California Regional Championships at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario Saturday night. With the win, the Wildcats advance to the 2013 California State Finals game. Windward's point run began in the second quarter when the Wildcat's Emily Surloff hit a long jumper to give the Wildcats a six point lead at 30-24.

Matthews Hits Last Second Three To Lift Samohi Over Loyola 53-50

The Santa Monica High School (29-6) and Loyola (25-8) basketball teams are no strangers to each other meeting for the third time this 2012-2013 season in the So. California Regional Championships at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario Saturday night. The highly anticipated basketball game didn't fail to live up to its billing. With the game tied at 50-50, Samohi guard Jordan Matthews hit a three-point shot to make the game 53-50. Only 1.4 seconds was left on the clock for Loyola to respond.

St. Monica Foul Trouble Causes Loss To St. Bernard 75-51

St. Monica (28-7) was defeated by St. Bernard (28-8) in the CIF California State Girls Basketball Playoffs 75-51 with the Vikings gaining control of the game from the opening tip-off until the last basket at home Tuesday night. St. Monica all-league forward Melissa Maragnes and all-conference guard Briana Harris got into foul trouble early in the game limiting their playing time in the first half and played a large factor in the Mariners loss to the Vikings.

Samohi Chops Down Mission Hills 51-33

The Santa Monica (28-6) boys basketball team was just smarter and faster then Mission Hills(29-5) outthinking and outscoring the Grizzlies 51-33 in the CIF State Playoffs Tuesday night even though the Grizzlies had 7'0" CIF San Diego Section Player of the Year Kameron Rooks. Mission Hills Basketball Head Coach Curtis Hofmeister said that the Santa Monica defense limited the shooting chances of Rooks and that was why the Vikings won the game. "He's been a workhorse for us," said Hofmeister. "Good things happen when he gets the ball. Unfortunately we didn't get him the ball enough and I give credit to them."

Lady Mariners Wear Down Cardinals 52-43 To Advance In State Playoffs

As if three victories weren't enough, St. Monica defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart 52-43 for the fourth time this season with guard Briana Harris scoring 30 points for the Mariners in the CIF State Playoffs win in front of a sellout crowd at home Saturday night. St. Monica Basketball Head Coach John Skinner said that the Mariners won for the fourth time because they were able to outpace the Cardinals in the second half. “It is tough to beat a well coached team four times and we were fortunate enough to do that," said Skinner.

Samohi Knocks Out Pali In Overtime Basketball Bout 76-63

Big players step up at big times and that's just what Santa Monica (27-6) forward Chris Smith did to the chagrin of crosstown rival Palisades High (23-10) who lost to the Vikings in overtime 76-63 after Smith tied the game 62-62 with 4.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter of the CIF State Playoffs at home Saturday night. Samohi Basketball Head Coach James Hecht said that the game went as predicted and was happy the Vikings won in the end. "The game went as we predicted it would be," said Hecht. "A drag out knock out 12 round bout and in the end we beat another very good team."

Samohi Wins Against Narbonne 73-68 To Advance In State Playoffs

With a minute left in the third quarter of the first round of the CIF Basketball State Playoffs, Santa Monica High School (26-6) held a commanding 57-36 lead over Narbonne (16-14) only to give most of it up in the fourth quarter before pulling off a win against the Gauchos 73-68. Santa Monica Basketball Head Coach James Hecht said that the Vikings play in the fourth quarter was not what he expected. "They got on fire and they shot the ball well and attacked as well," said Hecht. "We seemed very hesitant and very uncharacteristic about how we have been playing the last couple of weeks."

Third Time Is Charm For St. Monica Against St. Paul In CIF Championship Game

It was the third time St. Monica (29-6) had played St. Paul (19-13) in the 2012-2013 girls basketball season, but this time the Mariners overcame the Swordsmen 46-45 in the CIF Southern Section Finals at Mater Dei High School Saturday Night. St. Monica Girls Basketball Head Coach John Skinner said that he was impressed at how the coaching staff stuck together and stayed calm even after trailing by 17 points.

Samohi Comes Together To Win CIF Championship Game Over El Toro 66-56

It was an emotional night for Santa Monica High School (25-6) in the CIF finals game against El Toro (27-6) with nerves running high and affecting the shots of both teams, but that didn't stop Vikings guard Trevis Jackson from uniting his team and pulling off a 66-56 victory over the Chargers at the Anaheim Arena Saturday night. "I felt the pressure," said Jackson. "And I responded to the pressure in a positive way." The Vikings held a commanding lead over the game going up in the third quarter by 17 points at 30-13 after a 17-5 run in the second quarter and the lead proved to be too much of a deficit for the Chargers to overcome.

Westside Girls Basketball Teams Advance In CIF Playoffs

The Westside saw six of its teams enter the playoffs and compete in a winner advances tournament bracket to determine how far teams would advance toward the championship round of the CIF Southern Section Girls Basketball. Westside teams competing for the 2013 CIF Southern Section crowns include: Windward (30-0) Crossroads (21-3), St. Monica (27-6), Pacifica Christian (10-12), and Archer (6-18).

Samohi Blows Out Dana Hills 60-41 In CIF Basketball Semi-Finals

Santa Monica (24-6) defeated Dana Hills (23-8) 60-41 in the CIF Semi-Finals in front of a packed crowd of Vikings faithful in a game where the Vikings dominated the boards and stunned the Dolphins into submission at home Tuesday night. With the win, the Vikings advance to the CIF championship game. Santa Monica Boys Basketball Head Coach James Hecht was "very proud of the guys," for beating Dana Hills.

St. Monica Girls Basketball Defeats Cantwell-Sacred Heart 67-55 In CIF Semi-Finals

St. Monica defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart 67-55 away in the CIF Semi-Finals Saturday night in front of a standing room only crowd breaking free of a late fourth quarter tie to solidify the victory and advance to the CIF championship game. St. Monica Girls Basketball Head Coach John Skinner thought that the game was played in a "tremendous atmosphere" and was proud of the way the Mariners played so well even without star guard Brianna Harris who played less then half the game.

SMC Corsairs Oust Citrus Owls 73-68

With 44 seconds left to play in the basketball game, it looked like Citrus College(13-10) would upset Santa Monica College(15-8) after Owls guard Steven Thornton Jr. stole the ball away from Corsairs guard Keilan Horton and easily scored a layup to put the game within two at 70-68. But the Corsairs managed to burn down the clock until the Owls were forced to foul SMC guard Adam Griffen who made a free throw to extend the lead of the Corsairs at 71-68 with 15 seconds left in the game.

St. Monica Mariners Boys Basketball Fall To Brentwood Eagles 70-31

St. Monica(13-15) fell to Brentwood (25-3) by a score of 70-31 in a game where the Mariners seemed faced with a mismatch in every category and forward Leland King dominating the game with dunk after dunk to power the Eagles to victory. Mariners Basketball Head Coach Khi-Min Jung thought that the Mariners have had a tough season but did the best they could despite losing in the second round of the CIF Playoffs.

The Santa Monica High School(21-6) basketball team defeated Alhambra (13-12) soundly 75-32 showcasing why the Vikings are heavy favorites as the number two seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A at home Friday night. Samohi Basketball Head Coach James Hecht wants his team to continue playing pressure defense like they have done all season long.

Samohi Lady Vikings Win League Basketball Game Over Morningside 42-38

Santa Monica High School's Lady Vikings won a league basketball game over Morningside Tuesday night at home by a score of 42-38. Samohi started off strong and by the beginning of the third quarter, Samohi guard Autumn McKinsey had pushed the score for the Vikings up to 21-12 after converting a free-throw.
