Both our country and city are at crossroads. Both are also facing similar challenges. Locally, our Santa Monica environment is changing rapidly before our eyes. As we approach elections, we are spending a considerable amount of time considering divergent points of view. During this time, I invariably come back to a basic thesis – allowing for growth without compromising quality of life. In this regard, residents have always been the gatekeepers of our community when they’ve had a voice.

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry will receive the third annual J. Paul Getty Medal Saturday at a gala dinner at the Getty Center.

The three-story-high building cost $55 million and took several years to build and was part of a bond by voters in 2006 to update the Santa Monica and Malibu campuses.

KFA (Killefer Flammang Architects) recently celebrated its 40th anniversary of design excellence at an outdoor party held in its parking lot at Olympic Blvd. and 17th St. in Santa Monica. Friends, family, clients, and other well-wishers were in abundance – as were the food trucks that catered the event.

On the heels of the Downtown Specific Plan (DSP) that’s set to dominate the City Council’s agenda Tuesday evening, members of the Architectural Review Board (ARB) met with world-renowned architect and Santa Monica resident Frank Gehry on Wednesday to discuss design plans of a future art deco hotel to one of the city’s busiest intersections.
